PC very slow to boot and run,and very slow to open and close windows. Very, very slow with everything over past week or so…actually since upgrading itunes to current version. Also in last few days, cannot use Shockwave daily jigsaw…cannot move pieces on screen.

I scanned with Norton Internet Security, Malwarebyte Anti-Malware, Adware and did ATF Cleaners a few days ago. But yesterday and today PC froze when trying to fix infections with Adware…did nothing at that screen.

Thanks for any help you can give. Here is current HJT log from today:

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

The issues with your computer that you list, doesn't appear to be related to Malware/Spyware/Virus but we can have a look.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".

Thanks LDTate. I've already done the things indicated in your reply, so the HJT log should reflect that.

I don't see any Malware/Spyware/Virus in your hjt log. We can stop some un-needed items from loading at startup.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Bonjour

These aren't bad but not needed at startup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks, LDTate. As soon as I got rid of Bonjour, my PC perked up. And it improved even more after getting rid of all those startup programs you indicated. It's still slow to boot up (7-8 minutes until I can use the PC), but I gather that might be due to running ATF Cleaner. So I'll reboot a few times today and see if it improves. The time it takes to open and close windows has also improved. I'll have to update my Adobe flash player and Shockwave players since I'm now getting messages to do that.

If you can think of anything else I should do, please let me know. Otherwise I'll let you know tomorrow if boot up time improves. Thanks for all your help…greatly appreciated!

Hmmm, I thought I checked that one but must have missed it. It is the screensaver program I use…should I leave it as is or do you still want me to get rid of it?
If you use it, keep it.

The startup time could be related to the amount of RAM Memory you have.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Today boot up and opening windows seem to still be a little faster, but not by leaps and bounds…about the same as yesterday. I forgot to mention my PC also seems to be slow when trying to process several things at one time, e.g., with one window open to NY Times, open a link to a news item from that site, and bring up Outlook Express simultaneously. It seems to do things in a linear way and very slowly…5-10 seconds for each. I didn't see any change in speed with this problem after doing HJT fixes.

FYI, my PC is a bit older and has a 2.26GHz processor, 512mb DDR SDRAM memory, 80gb hard drive and 32mb DDR SDRAM NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 graphics card.

Before I do your standard "all systems clear" stuff, I'd like to get my Shockwave player working again. I was able to get back the ability to view videos by uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Flash Player, but not the ability to play the daily free Shockwave jigsaw puzzle. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Shockwave Player, but that did not work. Is there anything I deleted that might be needed? This is a link to that site: http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/jigsawpuzzles.jsp

Thanks again, LDTate!
Yup, I uninstalled, downloaded and installed Adobe Shockwave player several times yesterday with no luck at getting the Shockwave jigsaw puzzle working even though the Adobe test site indicated both the Flash player and the Shockwave player were installed and working properly. But miraculously today it is working…maybe it was the jigsaw site that was having problems. Unfortunately, my PC is just about as slow as before so I'll look into installing another 512mb of memory to see if that helps. It's getting to be a pain in the patoot to wait 5-10 seconds for a window to close. Regardless, it's nice to know it isn't infected. I know I probably need a new PC, but I don't want to get one with Vista. Thanks for all your help!
