Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but I just let firefox update and when it opened again, I had an AVG popup saying that D:\Program Files\Hidden Secrets The Nightmare\Nightmare_1_0_4.exe was a virus (no idea where this file came from). It also mentioned something about Explorer.EXE, but I stupidly closed the dialog too fast to make a real note.

Here's my hijackthis log:

Thanks in advance.
Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done two logs should open:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
No problem on the wait – I appreciate the help. My computer is acting normally as far as I can tell. That file on my D drive had to get there somehow though, I figure. Hi,

Is the entire D:\Program Files\Hidden Secrets The Nightmare folder new to you? Is there much else there?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator… to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe and select Run As Administrator… and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

  • Post that log back here.

We need to upload a file to Jotti

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

c:\windows\system32\madfump.sys

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

Thanks.
Interestingly enough, while this scan was running, AVG Resident Shield popped up with 14 or so trojans. So I've never seen that Hidden Secrets folder before, but it's new as of 2/5/09. It looks like a pretty standard program hierarchy with a bunch of dlls, inis, and images in the subdirectories. The thing that gives me pause is that I almost never use my D drive – it's an old drive that I just threw into this machine for some extra space in case I needed it. The fact that any new programs are there at all worried me. Here's my Malwarebytes log: —- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.33 Database version: 1743 Windows 6.0.6000 2/10/2009 4:51:18 PM mbam-log-2009-02-10 (16-51-18).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|D:\|) Objects scanned: 557602 Time elapsed: 3 hour(s), 52 minute(s), 49 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 3 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: D:\Users\allocate\Desktop\Keygens\Dreamweaver CS3 VLK[www.dl4all.com].exe (Trojan.Crax) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Hi,

Does anyone else use this computer?

Can you remember where AVG was finding these bad files, were they all on D:\?

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

Please right click Internet Explorer on your desktop and then select "Run As Administrator". Next, go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Please also run DDS again, and post the first log it gives (DDS.txt).

How's the computer running, other than this D:\ stuff?

Thanks.
