recently the computer got infected and after trying to clean it up, i downloaded spybot sd and after running it it wanted me to restart the computer and run it again to clean up a file, after i restarted it, it wouldnt load past the login screen. i never had to choose the user to login before. so when i click on the only user to start windows, it says windows is starting up and then switches to windows is saving your settings and then logging off and leaves me at the login screen. when i try to boot into safe mode the same thing exact same thing happens. ive also tried to the option "use last known good configuration" from the f8 menu when you start up the computer that also had no effect. if anyone has any advice or help on how to solve this issue, id greatly appreciate it. thanks.
Hi rory024.

Try booting to the Windows Advanced Options menu by pressing F8 as soon as your computer starts to boot,

Select Last Known Good Configuration form the listed options and press Enter.

See if that gets you going again.
i tried doing that and it responds the same way. loads to the login screen and wont go past. i was told i may need a windows xp cd or recovery cd. if thats the case, i have to do some type of recovery on it which im not to sure on how to do it. any help?
What is the make and model of your computer? It should have come with a recovery CD or a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. If all else fails, save your personal data using a Live CD like Puppy Linux, then use the recovery CD/partition to restore your computer to it's factory new state. See this post by Happyrck for how to boot Puppy Linux if you need to save your data before doing a clean install of XP. href=http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Help-Windows-XP-Wont-Start-t192486.html&view=findpost&p=1197721#entry1197721 Get the latest version listed as the one he recommends is no longer easily available.
Rory, boot to safe mode, and when the login screen comes up there should be a second account listed called "Administrator." It will be an account that is different than the account you normall use. Try to login with that account. If you don't see the administrator account, press ctrl-alt-del twice, and at the classic login window type in "administrator" for the username and leave the password blank. Post back with your results.
computer is a systemax tiger, i cant find the recovery cd but i got my hands on windows xp cd. the site posted doesnt help. i also tried the ctrl+alt del at login screen and typed in administrator, when i entered it a screen came up saying cannot log in due to account restrications.
If you are running XP Home edition, and you try the "Ctrl-alt-del" thing in normal mode you will receive the "account restriction" error.

That is why I said to boot into Safe Mode first.
