Hi.....am back again, and it seems like the staff is overwhelmed with viruses...so while I am waiting for someone to get back to me about my latest trojan problem, I have a question about this new thing called MAGIC JACK My boss wants me to use it, but the one he gave me was broken, it didn't work, I kept getting error error error..... but afterwards, I had alot of problems with my Verizon DSL....couldn't access the internet, kept getting told to check my USB cable....but I don't have a USB cable .... I have the ethernet connection..... i think I know what I'm talking about, but I don't know..... LOL anyway, that Magic Jack thingy did go into my USB port in the front of my tower, but it didn't work...then I'm thinking....how is it going to work, I don't get it???? how will i be talking to people thru my computer, with a new phone number, when my whole connection to the internet is through my Verizon phone number...... I don't see how this will work or if it can work with Verizon. If they change my phone number, won't I have problems connecting? And I really don't understand how I am going to talk to people thru my computer??? Huh? no receiver or anything to talk into...I know I'm pretty dumb and all....but I just don't get it and I really don't want more technology crud I have to worry about, but my boss is insisting I get this. thanks for reading my ignorant rambling.

Hi,
I have no experience of MAGIC JACK but in an attempt to help, fired up my trusty search engine.
Here's two sites that give some information............

http://www.ripoffrep...poff0320581.htm
and
http://www.wptv.com/...vc7oedLWTA.cspx

May be you will be able to find out more information, but if your boss wants you to install it.......will she/he pay for it, install it for you, and do any on the spot "trouble shooting"....?

This looks like a tough situation for you....as its your boss, you may be between a rock and a hard place...do you have any chums locally who have experience of this and could help you out if necessary.?

Whatever you do, back up all your data and important stuff, create a System Restore Point and back up your Registry (Erunt is good for this) and if you can, make a disc image using Drive Image, Ghost, Paragon, Acronis or something similar (Drive Image XML is free) and with a Barts PE boot disc (CD) also free, and your disc image kept safely on removable media, you have some protection if things turn out "not so good!"
Good luck and Regards

lol....no, never heard of ghosts and acronis and all the rest, and no, have no one to help me...... i have enough trouble trying to deal with these trojans I keep getting, despite having all the bells and whistles the kind people here told me to download..... sounds like so much more confusing work to do, that I do not know how to do, have no knowledge of...... thanks for the investigative reports, maybe if i show them to him, he will back off on me having to have this ...... looks like he will be having a hard time getting his money back LOL

hey paws, have been reading up on the net, and it seems like everyone is having problems with this magic jack and you better have all kinds of computer expertise to use it....... not exactly meant for an old lady like me who can barely cut and paste LOL.... Paws, can you contact TomK for me over in Malware....I posted my hijack this logs, for two days now I have been infected....i guess they are busy, but I am getting nervous what kind of damage is being done waiting for someone to help me. Tom was very helpful last time I went thru this...thanks

Hi compudodo, Looks like Tomk is on the ball (as usual) Regards paws Ps when Tomk has done cleaning your machine.....we should talk a little about Acronis and disc imaging...as you may have this program already installed on your machine and it could be a very useful thing for you to have.

oh lord, I have a real problem using all these different programs......i stopped using erunt because I didn't see why i was doing this every day, didn't know where to put it.... have no clue how i would use it to recover my system anyway...so i stopped using it....and i am deathly afraid of using new applications. I know I probably should be more intrepid, but I use the computer so infrequently..... i don't understand why it would be important to have this program..... i went into my control panel, add/remove programs and I don't see anything that says acronis..for some reason it does ring a bell, I thought I might have had it at some point, but maybe not.... unless it is part of another package ..... you guys have folders and know where to go to find things....i can't do any of this...i have such a problem locating stuff sometimes on my computer....i remember once for the life of me I could not access any of my photos because i just could not get them out of the place they were at...... just couldn't figure out the whole deal..... i obviously once knew, but again, i use things so infrequently, that when i go back to use them, i have no clue what i did originally to gain access or use the program. DUH...i'm a dolt. I bet you and Tom and Tallin could have field day teaching me stuff, but i'd forget it all in a matter of a few days if I'm not actually using it..... main reason I can't get a decent job anywhere...I did take a word/excel course...but forgot everything, totally everything I learned, and then they came out with newer versions...and I can't remember basic stuff...so no one hires me. I am lost in this technological world....heck, right now, I'm typing this on the computer at work, because I have a bad virus we can't seem to get the combo fix to work...or at least I probably have not turned off all the firewall and programs properly, so that is why i can't access the combo fix..... and I'm afraid to use my computer now, cause I have this trojan that is making my computer an open door for other trojans to enter. so........ whatever...... i think it would be waste of time to teach me stuff, don't you? I wish I could download music, buy a MP 3 player or an ipod or do some neat stuff, but I can't....I'm hopeless. But I thank you so much for the kind offer....and the good advice about the magic jack, hopefully my boss will stop pushing this at me...he says it is working fine on his computer....and i said, "Yeah, wait a few weeks!!!" Plus, he has a better broadband connection, much more powerful....I have the cheapo free model from Verizon and I can't even watch u-tube without all the stops and starts, buffering and all...... You guys are so great here.....I so truly love coming here, no one makes fun of me and everyone is so kind..... I have written a wonderful testimonial to you all, but it just doesn't seem enough..... you all should get some kind of compensation for all the hard work you do...... I so appreciate being able to come here..... ( I bought me a new digital camera for Xmas and am afraid to even try it....so that is what a scare-baby I am!!! LOL.... and I have a new printer/copier/scanner/faxer sitting on the floor, waiting for me to install it..... i just am not looking forward to it...last one i bought never worked cause i couldn't figure out how to align the cartridges or something like that....anyway...thanks so much, you are wonderful and I really appreciate it.

Hi compudodo

Greetings from the cold Scandinavia :)

You are way to hard on yourself... :o

You have to stop focusing on the things you think you can't do, and
instead try to focus on the things you know how to do, at the moment.
You found this place on the web, among millions of other places, you
found out how to register, create a new topic, and you have followed
complicated instructions from the good TomK. Who says you can't do
the rest also?

It just takes routine, and routine takes time. So time is all you need.
Granted, not all people are technical minded, but the basic stuff is
learnable, believe me! Instead of trying to learn 100 things at a time,
focus on 1-2 maybe 3 things you want to learn well enough to a point
where they no longer confuses you. Start of with some easy things.
And then set your mind to keep doing them once or twice every day for
a week, month or how long it would take you to have it on your backbone.

If you have troubles finding folders, set that as a task you want to learn
for example. If you have trouble finding specific things on your computer,
like settings for your mouse, set that as a task, and so on. Keep finding
them, until you no longer have to spend minutes figuring out where to look.
Make a Computer things-to-do-list, this could be maintenace for one! I know
Tallin would be happy to provide a list for you (Its already made you see).
Then its important, you don't try to make all steps at once, take one step one
day, the next step the other, and so forth. Keep doing this, and eventually you
will have it on your backbone, and maybe to a point where it is second nature,
scary ehh? Well, just kidding, but you catch the meaning I am sure.
If you need guidance or need some pointers, you know where to post right? ;)
Of course, it will take some dedication on your part, but the gains are well
worth it. If it is something you would like to try, just say so, and we can arrange
a new topic where we go through it together, step by step in a pace of your liking.
And if you suddenly comes up with an idea of something you want to learn, we
just incorporate that as well. You don't have to become a computer-expert, you
just have to learn enough, so you are comfortable using your PC. That should be
your goal.

Rome wasn't build in one day as the saying goes, nor is computer knowledge ;)

As for the Magic Jack, I suggest you write the link-adresses down provided by Paws,
and show those reviews / complains to your boss. Tell him, it might cost him money
otherwise, that usually gets them up from their comfortable chairs...! :yeah:

Hehe, see what your post made me do, I nearly wrote a whole book here. It just seems
to me that you have so many thoughts going through your head, it might be difficult to
find head and tail in it. So stop being hard on yourself, and pat your back for the things
you have already accomplished.
"One small step for a expert, a giant-leap for Compudodo" B) (By the way, the Dodo's
are extinct, as I am sure you know, hopefully you're not...computer-wise speaking)

Kind Regards

ABYDOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HI THERE SWEETIE!!

How perfectly wonderful you stopped by...... You are so sweet........ oh my goodness, now I did it, my computer is talking to me!!!!! It is talking, it is repeating everything I type!!!! how the heck did this happen????

See? I have no idea how these things occur!!! Who knew my computer talks? ok, I'm shutting the sound off, this is annoying!!!!

There, that's better......

I'm telling ya..... who knew????? AND WHO KNEW MY MOUSE HAD SETTINGS?????? LOL.....I am not kidding, I'm laughing my head off here..... who knew the mouse had settings? NOT ME!!!!!

Ok..... you are so kind and so patient...well, you all are here....I would talk more, but I gotta get going over to the trojan repair area, Tom is trying to get a Trojan out of my machine, and it keeps letting in other other Trojans, so I don't want to be on too long.... Yeah, I probably should have a schedule of things to do on certain days, that would be a great idea. Tallin can hook me up with that? I better go find him after I get rid of the Trojan...that sounds like a great idea, it might keep me out of trouble too :)...... thanks so much for stopping by and saying hi....I have a job now did ya know??? It's not full time, but it is with an almost exclusively internet business and I haven't crashed his computers yet LOL...... He is very knowledgable too, and is willing to come over and help me with the computer end of things that stump me here...so that is a plus. I hope you are doing well in 2009....we are expecting another storm to start tonite, rain at first, then more snow...we have been getting snow every week around here, so I bet we are just as cold as you are...and just as white!!!!! Glad to see you and talk to you!!!! Now THAT made my day.... see you around sweetie, and thanks again for saying hi and giving me good encouragement, vibes and positivity. You are right, I lean toward the negative far too much... Take care, stay warm and love to EVERYONE IN SCANDINAVIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (especially Norway and Finland cause I have fallen in love with lots of poets from those two countries.... my favorite poet here, Robert Bly, does wonderful translations) brightest blessings, Candice

Hey there Paws.....you said I should be learning something with my Acronis program, which I do seem to have because Tom K said I have it, and it does show up in my scans....but it does not appear in my control panel under add/remove programs..... So....how do I find this program and what is it I should be doing with it....and where do I go around here to get a good schedule for a maintenance program...something easy, just something I should do, one or two things every day of the week that will keep my computer in better running order. I'm up for this now...I think I can do this!!!!!!!!!

Hi there Candice :)

I'll drop Tallin a line, that the maintenance list is on demand ^_^
Tallin might even be able to give you some pointers and directions
regarding Acronis ("Abydos knows Tallin use it... :yeah: ")

And if Tallin is busy, I'll direct you regarding maintenance and other such things.
Sounds like a plan? B)

Good to hear you got yourself a job. Hope you are doing well in your new
enviroment! Ohh, and not to forget, thank you so much for the nice poem you
wrote over in malware forum :D

Take care 'til we talk again :wavey:

 Good Morning Candice,

Well you are a one, a good job achieved since we last spoke to each other. Well done and Congratulations. You speak well of your boss too so that is a good start.

I must comment on your Avatar, love it, gave me a great laugh. Did you format it yourself?

I read your log with TomK, he has done wonders as usual, but he couldn't have done it without your computer expertise at your end. You certainly are most welcome here. We all like helping where we can so my reasons for this post are many, but the main ones are:
  • Get you going with a Backup program - most important
  • A good Maintenance program up and running - Just as important
  • Install ERUNT back on your system - very important
  • Update your version of Java which is out of date
Backing up your System

Let us start with a backup program. As I see in your HJT log you seem to have Acronis installed and even running on this system of yours. Please go to

  • Start
  • Search - For Files and Folders
  • Let it run and report back the results please
After doing the above, please do the following

  • Open My Computer, either on your Desktop or Posted Image My Computer
  • Open C:/Drive (double click on it)
  • Program Files
  • Find Acronis Folder
  • Report back what you find in it please
Once we have the above information we can continue assisting your with setting up Acronis or obtaining it. I have found on the internet for you a free version of it, although older, it will do the job if we need to download and install it.
__________

Maintenance Program

Here is a good start, take it slowly, Rome was not built in a day as I think Abydos mentioned. You will find some of the options are already there, however continue on to the very end.

As a weekly chore for you to follow, go here and particularly read the middle to end section for weekly maintenance for your system.
___________

Backing up your Registry with ERUNT

Please follow this link I cannot stress to you how important this is to do. Read it thoroughly and you will understand why I am asking that it be done.
__________

Keeping your Java updated

This is included in your weekly Maintenance link above, but here it is again in case you get a little lost initially.
_________

Candice, please do not hesitate to post back if anything is unclear. I am only to happy to assist you in obtaining the above programs and making sure you understand why you need them and how they will work on your system.

After the above knowledge gained, you will have the added bonus of not having to visit with TomK :notworthy: again in the near future. :woot:

Best regards,
