Somehow or other, a weekend employee has helped introduce malware to our office's point of sale computer. the log follows. it brings up extra IE and firefox windows and keeps reloading and reloading some IE windows with no content. I'm sure there are lots of nasties here so thanks in advance for any assistance!

Hello DaveM and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Treuven and thanks for your willingness to help. Here's the combofix log:

A. First we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools. Please disable the same tools as you did the first time we ran ComboFix. After you have finished the online scan, please reactive all security programs.

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

File::
c:\windows\system32\gadufugi.dll
c:\windows\system32\hufumene.dll
c:\windows\system32\hoyuvuki.dll
c:\windows\Tasks\rqjdhoid.job
c:\windows\system32\khfFxVop.dll

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"c:\\Program Files\\Java\\jre1.5.0\\bin\\jucheck.exe"=-
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again. Do not use your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.

5. All your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) will be stopped.

[external image: Posted Image]

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

6. ComboFix will automatically REBOOT your machine when the KillAll:: switch is used..

7. Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

C. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

1. Please delete all iems from your MalwareBytes Quarantine.

2. Please also delete all items in the Sent folder of your email client.

3. A. First we must disable the same security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\boveweya.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\furarami.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yuhuyube.dll
KillAll::

Finally, please tell me if you are aware of more problems similar to the ones you were experiencing before we started.

The behavior hasn't been noticeable as of late. I owe you a bottle of wine!
1. [external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

2. Congratulations, your logs look CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you system is completely clean:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • [external image: Posted Image]

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Use and Update an Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.
