I am working in a developing country and need some help. The office where I work has a computer with a virus that keeps installing a program Pictures.exe on thumb drives. Unfortunately, this is the only computer in the office that has a printer. I tried to install AVG on the computer, but got a message that said that the computer OS (Windows 2000 SP 4 plus High) which is odd because on startup it says that the computer is Windows XP. The only people with Administrator access to the computer are in a different city and come once a month. With the only account available I do not have access to the control panel so I can't look at the system info or activate the internet. I was able to install HijackThis and here is a copy of the report. The computer runs fine, just installs the virus on everything. I have a laptop with AVG and have no problem cleaning the virus from my thumb drive.

The computer is set up to for a print server and I don't have access to change the IP settings to access the internet. Any other options?
The print server is not connected through the internet, just a router set up purely for printing. No internet access at all. To access the internet I need to physically move the computer to another room where there is a modem (there is only one in the office) and connect to the modem. Unfortunately, to do this I need to change the ip settings from the static settings of the print server to automatically get the internet settings, which I don't have access to do. I don't know why the system is set up this way. I would think it would be good for one person in the office to have admin access to the computers, but there is not. I am a Peace Corps volunteer and I offered to help with the problem. It may just need to wait for the IT people to come next week and take care of it. Thanks
They aren't going to be able to fix this issue without formatting

Ok lets continue, you need to get these transferred onto the machine somehow

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.
Command prompt has been disabled by the admin. I will need to wait for one of the IT admins to come down and have them take care of it. Thanks for your help.
