Hi there,
For no apparent reason (to me!) my system became completely crippled this morning - Windows XP - I rebooted multiple times before I was able to get F8 to put me into safe mode - I'm now set for automatic safe mode rebooting as regular mode seizes after a few operations. Other than updating software within the past few days, no new programs installed, and my computer is in constant use - no immediate effects after software updates. What the heck happened?!
Thanks

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

Apologies in the delay in a response. We are overwhelmed with logs at the moment and there aren't enough helpers to go around. If you still require help, please do the following:

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration? This option should appear along side Safe Mode.

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
Please describe how your computer is behaving at the moment, listing any symptoms and problems that you are experiencing.

Thanks.
Hi there, Thank you for your note - and your explanation. I was really disappointed I hadn't heard back since the help on these forums is usually pretty good - but I understand the problems with volunteers being overtaxed… In the end I bit the bullet and reinstalled my operating system - a painful reminder to oneself to remember to back up important data! Fortunately I was able to salvage the important stuff from my crippled system. In the end my hard drive itself packed it in, and the manufacturer replaced it under warranty. After reinstalling everything AGAIN I now actually think I might be having a hardware problem with one of my stacked USB ports possibly shorting out (one is damaged - insulator gone) - internal and external USB hard drive both failed within days of each other and/or a failing touchpad - which might be causing my computer to appear seized when it isn't really. Anyway, I've redirected my efforts to a hardware teardown/troubleshoot so I guess you can close this topic for now until I rule out hardware as being an issue. Cheers! LiO
Hi, Thanks the update on your system. I am sorry it came to that and once again I apologize that you didn't a reply sooner. Glad to hear to saved the important stuff. Good luck with the hardware issues  I will close this now, I hope that if you require our help again that we can respond sooner. Cheers.
