Hi Tinytears,

Usually the system can be cleaned from the main account. Malware doesn't always play by the rules, though. ATF should only slow boot time for a couple of boots.

We'll clean out the 2 that came back with combofix and go from there.

Please follow all previous instructions regarding security programs.

Open a new Notepad session
  • Click the Start button, click run
  • in the run box type notepad
  • click ok
  • In the notepad, Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not checked.
  • Copy and paste all the text in the code box below into the Notepad. Do Not copy the word CODE

KillAll::

File::
c:\windows\system32\bozuhuwi.dll
c:\windows\system32\wizisili.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"kubafomufi"=-
"88b7a73d"=-

In the notepad
  • Click File, Save as…, and set the Save in to your Desktop
  • In the filename box, type (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFScript.txt"
  • Click save
Using your mouse left button, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the ComboFix.exe icon as shown below.

This will start ComboFix again.Close all browser/windows first.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

If combofix doesn't reboot your computer, please do so. After the restart, please obtain a new HJT log for both accounts and post them along with the combofix log.

Has the system preformance improved?

Thanks
Which side am I running the combofix on? The main side or the other one? Also knowing my C: is almost full I tried to run system defrag to see if that would help speed up the machine. When I entered the Defrag program I received a message that said "MMC has detected an error in snap-in it is recommended you shutdown and restart MMC" It then gave me three options one was to shut down MMC and alert Microsoft, one was to ignore it and one is to always ignore it. Tinytears
Hi Tinytears. Please run combofix from your usual account (the one we've been working on) Defrag requires 15% HD space. I'll have to get back to you on the MMC error. Did the slow downs start after installing avast? Thanks
Not sure if the system started to slow down with avast or not. Really did not mess with it this morning to check on speed as I wanted to send you the logs before I left for work. Will check when I get home. My system currently has 17% free according to the Disk Defragmenter. Sorry this is short I am running late.

Here are the logs:

Combofix:

Thanks again,

Tinytears

Ps I created a file folder to move the logs into and that part seemed to be much faster than the last time I did it. The last time I did it I had a wait a short bit for the menu to even pop up to select new folder.
Hi Tinytears,

There may be a bit of conflict between Symantec and avast. Let's continue cleaning and you may be able to determine if the preformance has improved. I will get back to you on the MMC error.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Next, Double click OTMOVEIT3 to open it
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Do not copy the word CODE
    :Files
    c:\program files\Vuze
    c:\documents and settings\Sonny\Application Data\Azureus

    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

There may also be a hidden dropper. Since we can't get Rootrepeal to work, we will run GMER again.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Please post the OTMOVEIT3 log and a new HJT (main account only) log in your next reply. Attach the GMER log.

Let us know how the system is and any problems you are having.

Thanks
In all honosty I am not sure why Symantic is on my machine. Also, I just tried to remove Viewpoint again from the computer but I did not see it on the main account. Will check the other account prior to running the other items on the main account. Tinytears
Last night prior to running GMER (I have not really used the computer since as I let that run overnight) the computer took better than a minute to open a program. When going to control panel I saw the flashlight looking for things and then my control panel opened. I know my housemate was using the other account and they said that they had no problems at all. Thoughts that are running through my head but have not had a chance to confirm them as I have pretty much only used this machine to do the items you suggest are: are the problems possibly intermittent; is it on particular programs which leads to the thought do some things run ok; is it only when opening programs? I need to look into some of this further. I know not what you want to hear. I will see if I can get my housemate to play on my side for a while and see if they notice anything. In the meantime here are the logs you requested.

Thanks again for everything. I really appreciate all that you are doing for me.,

Tinytears
Hi Tinyears,

Sorry about that, I had you uninstall Viewpoint earlier.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and save it to your desktop. You will use it later.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall

LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)
Symantec KB-DocID:2003093015493306

Reboot

Next double click Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Next, use OTMOVEIT3 with this script

:Files
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Program Files\Symantec
c:\documents and settings\Jenni\Application Data\Viewpoint

Next, make sure your Windows firewall is turned on,

Click start, click control panel, click Security Center. At the bottom of Security Center click windows firewall. Ensure it is set to On.

Please obtain a new HJT log. How are things now?

Thanks
Things are much better. The system does not seem to be so slow anymore. I still get the flashlight for a little bit when I open the control panel but that is liveable. A couple of programs have lost their exe files but I am not worried about that. I figure they probably got lost by accident along the way. I am still getting the MMC error with defrag though. Here are the latest logs.

Also when in add/remove I did not see the symantic program but I am figuring it may have been removed when I removed the other two.

Tinytears
Hi Tinytears,

Which programs are you having trouble with?

Cracks/Keygens

Besides the legality, these are a very common way to get seriously infected. If you have any other cracks or keygens on your computer I would strongly advise you to remove them. As I stated early in the fix, this is likely the source of your infection.

MMC error
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915843

It seems like a lot of user's with Diskeeper are experiencing the same problem after updating to XP Service Pack 3.

From a post by a DK tech

Hello, the problem you are experiencing is due to a change in the
version of MMC contained in Service Pack 3. It is a non-harmful error,
and you can check the "always ignore" option without fear of damage to
your system. The message should cease to pop up and Diskeeper will
function as it should.

Later versions of Diskeeper have the updated MMC information. We offer
full functioning trials on our website if you would like to try the
latest version of Diskeeper.

Executive Software changed it's name to Diskeeper a little over 3 years
ago. The link that you using may no longer be valid.

Here is the current web site: http://diskeeper.com/

If you ever have any questions, or are having any problems with the
software, please feel free to contact us. We have one of the best Tech
Support staffs and will quickly and diligently to find a solution.

If no problems or questions, we'll clean up after you post back.

Thanks
It was just a couple of games not keygens or anything. I can just reinstall them if need be. It looks like everything is there with the exception of the exe file. In all honosty I really did not need them on my machine. The program directory the keygen was in was a specific game I had tracked down for a friend. As my machine was already having a lot of problems prior to obtaining it I did not realize that the program was related. I had actually ment to remove the program and had not done it prior to my logging onto whatthetech and being advised not to remove anything without advisement. I am really happy with the way the machine is running. I think it is working great compared to how it was. Do you recommend ignoring the message or updating the diskeeper/defrag program? I :notworthy: (bow) to your expertise. Just went to spellcheck and received a message saying ieSpell not detected click ok to go to download page. Is it ok to do it? (Yes I am paranoid about downloading things now.) THANK YOU for all your help, you are amazing. Tinytears
Hi Tinytears,

Glad to hear everything your system is running better. You are very welcome and thanks for your patience.

MMC
Go ahead, choose the ignore option. This error, as explained in the Diskeeper Tech's post, is because MS updated the version of MMC with Service Pack 3. Here's the links again

From your desktop, please delete
  • GMER.exe
  • GMER.zip
  • Rooter.exe
  • Rootrepeal.zip
  • Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
Also any notepads/logs that we created and Rootrepeal from the location you unzipped it to.

In Windows Explorer, please delete
  • C:\Rooter$
ESET online scan can be uninstalled via add/remove programs if you wish.

I suggest you keep ATF and MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it as an on demand scanner.

You can re-enable Teatimer or Windows Defender when you have finished the following steps. You don't need 2 resident antispyware programs at the same time.

Ok, clean up time.

Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /u

Open OTMOVEIT3 then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 8 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
