[Resolved] Page redirects to pdf.php url and then system hangs.

Hi,

This is happening a lot lately and I am not sure if my system has got some virus or not ? While browsing through websites, sometimes I am redirected to pdf.php URL's similar to this and then the system hangs. - "http://76.74.239.143/zoweoiruweoiurow/pdf.php?id=2219&vis=1

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thanks for the reply. Happy New Year by the way !

I followed the instructions but Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware didn't find any malicious content. So far the computer is running fine. Haven't encountered the redirect problem past 2 days. Although if I leave my laptop on for a while, I lose the Wireless Network Connection Status Icon ( that little computer symbol ). Sometimes it will freeze up and I won't be able to repair the connection. I will then have to restart the machine in order to connect to the wireless network again. ( Not sure if this has to do anything with the malware etc but this is happening lately. Earlier I could leave my laptop on forever and didn't have any problem. )

– For some strange reasons, I wasn't able to open the site. I read some instructions on the internet and added the host.

Well as suggested, I removed Bonjour and fixed the items listed using HijackThis. Rebooted and did a quick scan. Posted the logs below.

Computer is behaving fine so far. Haven't lost internet connection Icon or encountered redirect problem again. ( Actually didn't get a chance to spend much time on the computer but hopefully I can monitor the behavior this weekend. )

Lets fix your host file. That can be dangerious.

Please download HoxtXpert.

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Double click on HostsXpert.exe
Then click on "Restore Original Hosts" to restore your Hosts file to its default condidtion..
Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against further infection.
Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi, I am unable to restore the hosts file to its default condition. Getting an error window which says - Cannot create file C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts I see lot of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Distroy Please advise. Thanks, -VK

you have to click: ''make hosts writable'' in the top right corner, then press the ''restore MS hosts file'' option. Let me know if that worked

That worked ! I changed it to writable, restored back to the original and then made it readable only. Emptied the recycle bin and rebooted. Here is the latest log :

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.

- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

[*] Winpatrol

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.

Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

By the way, I just encountered the wireless network connection issue…. All of a sudden I lost the internet connection ..the modem and router are working fine ..cause the other computer is alright ….something on my laptop is messing it up …don't know what it is …The little wireless network computer icon shows that I am connected and the signal strength is excellent but the pages won't load up …I can't even repair the connection, as I am unable to do a right click …So I had to reboot my pc to get it working …

I know this may not be related to malware but any idea what might be causing this ? Here is what I followed when my computer was infected last time …
