browser redirects a lot

A couple of weeks ago I wasn't paying attention and said yes to a codec download. Now about every third link I click in Explorer redirects to another site. Usually Google or a bogus porn site. If I click any of the links on the redirected site it takes you to a pharmacy, gambling, etc.. site. I've tried killing everything I know of. Thought it was going to be smitfraud but it doesn't look like it. I'm really going nuts here. Help.

Hello Surge98b and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums. I am currently looking over your log. As I am an still in training here, everything that I post to you must be reviewed by one of the teachers. Hello Surge98b,

I recommend you print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

I had changed the DNS server setting a long time ago - I had forgotten about it. Roadrunner could not find itself unless I used the Austin, TX DNS. I put it back to auto. Here is the fixwareout log and the hijackthis log. The problem is still here. It seems like any link that doesn't snap right up will trigger this redirect.

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:

* Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
* Accept the license agreement by clicking the radio button.
* Under Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 9, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.

Hello surge98b,

Your log appears to be clean and I'm glad things are running better. Just to finish up and a couple of suggestions:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected anyway)

1. Turn Off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Turn On System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

In addition to running and updating your current Anti-Malware protection, I recommend also adding the following:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
