Hi, My husband has been experiencing extremely slow loading of internet pages, they freeze up & his browser closes intermittantly the last few days. He thought he had a registry error and downloaded a "registry fixer" program, which found 442 errors, fixed them and it seemed fine for about a day and then it all started again. I think he has a trojan horse or some sort of malware hidden that keeps reinfecting and he's finally agreed to give me a couple of days to see if I can help him fix this computer as he needs it for work. (EDIT) After reading these forums for several hours, I see he's got "dvd43" which he tells me he "can't get rid of" after trying to uninstall more than once! Could this be our problem?

Do you see anything that could be the problem?

Thanks for your help!
Pay a visit to the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 - I.E. is preferred for this scan.
  • Read the Information panel and then click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Both the anti-virus engine and database will need to be downloaded, which may take a little time.
  • Once this has been completed, select My Computer from the Scan section on the left hand side.
  • Put the kettle on!
  • Although it is recommended by Kaspersky that you should disable your anti-virus scanner before starting this scan, it should work OK with it still active - it does on my PC.
Although you may find the scan speed increases if you carry out this step, I never like to disable my resident scanner while online, so I don't.
  • When the scan has completed, click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save and pick a location for the file - the Desktop is always handy.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Thank you for your help! I ran the the Kaspersky Online Scanner and it "found no malware", completely clean! One of the problems with the computer was that it kept changing his home page from Google to MSN and he lost the tabs. He tried to download IE 7 again but it would shut off the computer. After the Kaspersky scan I was able to download IE 7 without any problems (he didn't mention this was one of his problems before!) and he has the tabs again and it hasn't tried to change his home page.

Are there things we can get rid of to speed things up and still need to figure out how to delete (uninstall) dvd43? Those seem to be the only issues that are bothering him at this point. Again, thank you for your time and help! It is very much appreciated!
OK, we'll start with the uninstallation.

You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine fully for the changes to take effect.
Now boot the PC into Safe Mode and the try uninstalling DVD43 v4.3.1 via Add/Remove Programs. You may find it goes this way. Let me know how you get on.
Spy-bot is off, we are in safe mode, and this is the error message my husband has gotten every time he has ever tried to uninstall this program: File "C:\Program Files\dvd43\unins000.dat" does not exist. Cannot uninstall. What do we try next?
The missing file contains the information necessary for the program to uninstall itself properly. Reinstalling it would hopefully have recreated this file and enabled you to uninstall the program. Will you look in the Quarantine section of your anti-virus program and any other scanners you have onboard and see if the file C:\Program Files\dvd43\unins000.dat is there. It is possible that it has been identified as malicious and removed - unfortunately false positive detections aren't unheard of. If you can't find it, you may not be able to remove it as successfully as you would have liked.
I couldn't find it anywhere! I believe you may be right, he's not going to be able to uninstall this program. Is there anything else he can do to clean up his laptop to speed things up a bit. Everything else seems to be resolved at this point. Thanks again for your help!
Although it is going to be difficult to dig out any leftovers in the registry, you can perform a little cleaning job on the program:

1) End Running Processes through Task Manager.
To do this:
Press and hold CTRL and Alt and tap Delete. This will open Task Manager.
If it is not selected, click on the 'Processes' Tab.
Scroll down and locate the following:

dvd43_tray.exe

Click to highlight it, and then click on 'End Process'

2) Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dvd43] C:\Program Files\dvd43\dvd43_tray.exe

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked

This will stop the program from running a startup. In theory you should also be able to delete the folder: C:\Program Files\dvd43, but I don't know enough about how dvd43 installs to know if this will upset your system. So unless you actually need the hard drive space, i'd leave the folder alone.

As for the speed issues:

The following steps will serve as a spring clean for your PC. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.

1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.

2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please Note: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only.

3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.

This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.

4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available here.

5) Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.

Let me know how you get on.
