I posted this yesterday - at least i thought i did, but cannot find it on site, and my profile says i have not posts! So if found sorry! If not, here is the goss.

Newly loaded systems xp pro. have downloaded (evidently) a couple of juicy viruses. Got rid of two or three trojans - i think - but still browser is acting strang and redirecting etc. system awful slow… Have pop up windows saying i won a laptop and that sort of thing. have only clicked red x's, not ok or cancel…. Oh and my norton or adaware would not do live update, spybot did….. go figure….

Also have norton 360 on board, dont know enough about it, but seems to be fairly crappy at protecting me. I just bought 3 years for 3 systems, so bit cranky about that. Really thinking should change to kerspesky…. an i get some thoughts please? Obviously one thing at a time and i will get this fixed first……

went to newbie site and did as requested, also have logs below. What i have done so far, is download spybot s&d, ran and cleaned, and adware 2008, ran and cleaned. pc much better, but still a little dicky, especially on internet browser (mozilla).

ok here are logs.

Hi meredith9053,

:welcome: and Merry Christmas!

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

meredith9053,

Log looks good :D

  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Hey Tom, Firstly I cannot stress again my thanks. I am keen to learn so much about this sort of thing. I build my own systems at home and totally enjoy it, and have now a new keen insterest in malware. I have been checking some things out of the site, and love your informative posts. I have been trying to find a button to click to donate or pay for services and there is nothing! lastly, my pc is running as good as ever. Whatever we last did fixed the outlook opening problem too. all is fantastic. I dont know if I can ask but I will just in case, what is your opinion on best security for my system. I have done as last post asked, and thats all fine. But was wondering if i should uninstall norton 360 and run kespersky or something else. The people at norton said i only needed norton and that was all, but evidently that was not enough. My updates are all set as automatic on virus programs, as i am aware of its importance. My firewall is usually activated, only had to stop it for the online kespersky scan. apart fromt hat they are always on. Thanks so very much. Meredith
meredith9053,

If you still have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

As far as donations, none are necessary. If it is something you really want to do, there is a button that says Donate right under WhattheTech in the upper left of your screen (just to the right of Home and Forums). However, the absolutely best way you could "donate", seeing as how you have expressed an interest in malware fighting, is to click the classroom link in my signature, apply to the classroom, study, graduate, and join the fight here. :D
