GreatGuy,

1. There is still no background on my desktop, can I reinstall the graphic? This was a Windows default one

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop… -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

2. I noticed that when I restart in Safe Mode the text is garbled, so 'MENU' would be written as 'MDNU', 'REBOOT' as 'REBROT' and so on. This is throughout the page. Is it a problem?

Doesn't sound right to me. Are you sure that its not just "fuzzy" because of minimal drivers?
Tomk Thanks for your help as always. Desktop background is OK. Matter settled. With regards to other query, I restarted PC in Safe Mode (tapping F8 after restart etc) and the Screen comes up exactly as follows: Windows Advanced Optionr Mdnu Pld'se reldbt 'n option: Safd Mnde Safd Mnde vhth networking Safd Mnde vhth Boml'nd Prolpt En'ble Boot Loffinf Enable VGA Modd Last Known good Configuration (your most recent settings that vnrkdd) Dirdctnry Rdrvices Restore Mode (Windows domain controllerr onlyx) Debtgghng Lnde disable automatic rdst'rt nnsxrtel fahlurd Start windows normally Rebnot Return to OS Chnicdr Mdnu Use the up and down aeenw jdys to lnve the highlight to your choice What do you think? Regards GreatGuy
I mean PC is working fine in the sense that there are no malware problems or hi jack attempts. The mumbled text when in "Safe Mode" is the only issue. If this is a problem or not I don't know. Thanks.
I don't have a clue so just tossing out things…

Is text in the BIOS Setup Menu fine? I might replace the BIOS battery just because they are cheap. That will also reset the BIOS, which might help. Some BIOS allow you change the BIOS language. If that one does, it may be corrupt and resetting may help.

In normal Windows, if you open a command prompt (Start > Run, then enter cmd in the text box) then enter something (ipconfig /all for example) at the command line and press Enter, does the text look fine?

Download and run Windows Memory Diagnostic - see the easy to follow instructions under Quick Start Information to make a bootable floppy. I am not looking for RAM errors but booting to the Diagnostics disk bypasses the hard drive, and the Windows installation on it. If it is scrambled there, the problem is your computer, and not your Windows installation.
Digerati Thanks for the advice. Problem is solved. It had to do with the RAM as you correctly stated. I am not that technical but if I understand correctly my memory is split into two (Corsair 512 MB each) and there was a problem with one of them. The PC technician disconnected it and the PC worked fine with just one of the RAMs. As it had a lifetime warranty from the supplier I got a replacement and after installing it, all is working fine. I hope this makes sense and I explained clearly enough. Please excuse any inconvenience caused Thank you for your advice and the assistance of Tomk. From my end the matter is closed. You guys are the best! GreatGuy
