I ran AVG, adaware and a-squared but am still experiencing problems with PC. Basically when I try to access a website by clicking on favourites or navigating from one page to another within a site I am either getting the "Blank" page or a pop-up to get some free anti-spyware scan, even when declining the offer I am still being redirected to the anti-spyware scan page. Going back to previous page is not always suceesful and highly frustrating and even to access this forum proved impossible. So I had to reboot in safe mode to get here.

Any assistance in solving the problem is appreciated.

Took L D Tate's advice and did some self help as he instructed. So I followed his instructions, sid the ATF clean up, downloaded and ran Malwarebytes. Attached is the the log of Malwarebytes and a new HiJackThis Log.

PC is actually working OK now, pop-ups prohibitting easy internet navigation seem to be no longer around and this post is being done in normal mode not safe mode. Your advice on whether everything is ok would still be apprecaited.

Merry Christmas

Hi GreatGuy,

:welcome: and Merry Christmas!

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Tomk, thanks for your assistance. Did as instructed and SmitfraudFix report is attached. Please note that PC aapears to be working fine after following L D Tate's self help instructions and running Malwarebytes. Otherwise, I hope ypu had a good Christmas and find time to enjoy the holiday saeson. Thanks again. GreatGuy,

Glad it's working better but your not clean yet.

I had a great Christmas. Hope yours was the same.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
Tomk thanks for your reply and it was good to hear you enjoyed Christmas. Mine was ok too, you know a lot of family stuff, presents, eating and so on. Good fun overall.

Did as instructed and you can find the report from SmitfraudFix and the latest HiJackThis log.

Thanks for all your help.

GreatGuy

GreatGuy,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Tomk as always thanks for your help. Please excuse the time it takes to reply sometimes but with commitments and other things to do besides being in different time zones, it is not always easy.

OK did as instructed and await your next instructions, results of ComboFix are as follows:

GreatGuy,

BitTorrent and DNA
You have BitTorrent and DNA, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm://http://www.techweb.com/wire/1605005…cles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall BitTorrent and DNA, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here
Tomk, thanks for advice. BitTorrent and DNA removed (I hardly ever used them) and I ran Rooter as instructed. Results as follows: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition ( v5.1.2600 ) Service Pack 3 X86-based PC ( Multiprocessor Free : Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.20GHz ) BIOS : BIOS Date: 01/03/06 17:58:55 Ver: 08.00.10 USER : Owner ( Administrator ) BOOT : Normal boot Antivirus : AVG Anti-Virus Free 8.0 (Activated) A:\ (USB) C:\ (Local Disk) - NTFS - Total:116 Go (Free:10 Go) D:\ (Local Disk) - NTFS - Total:116 Go (Free:31 Go) E:\ (CD or DVD) G:\ (USB) H:\ (USB) 2008-12-28| 9:42 ———————-\\ Search.. ———————-\\ Cracks & Keygens.. GreatGuy,

It appears that the last time you were helped on this forum you were warned about cracks. This is probably the source of your infection. If you keep doing this, you may find help on the forums hard to come by.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\program files\jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe
    c:\program files\Ahead.Nero.v8.2.8.0.Incl.Keymaker-EMBRACE.part1.rar

    Driver::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

  • Copy the following in your clipboard by highlighting it all, then right click and select copy.
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE" /ve /t REG_SZ /d %systemroot%\pchealth\helpctr\Binaries\MSCONFIG.EXE /f
  • Click START in the lower left of your screen
  • Then click RUN
  • Now right-click in the runbox then select Paste
  • Click OK

Also please give me one more HijackThis log.
Tomk

Thanks for assistance and advice. Will follow it.

Did as instructed and results to ComboFix and HiJack This are attached. Await further instructions.

Thanks again.

  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Tomk Thanks. All understood and done as instructed. Advice also appreciated. Just two final questions: 1. There is still no background on my desktop, can I reinstall the graphic? This was a Windows default one. 2. I noticed that when I restart in Safe Mode the text is garbled, so 'MENU' would be written as 'MDNU', 'REBOOT' as 'REBROT' and so on. This is throughout the page. Is it a problem? Thanks & Regards GreatGuy
