Hi rsre15,

Either the bug wasn't completely fixed or there was a copy/paste error. Please check for the presence of this file
c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpdtlk02.dll

There is a driver that we can disable
  • Right-click My Computer on your Microsoft Windows desktop, and then click Properties.
  • On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
  • From the Device Driver View menu, choose Show hidden devices.
  • Click the plus sign (+) next to Non-Plug and Play Drivers to expand the listing, and then locate the Mrtrate driver.
  • Right-click Mrtrate, and then select Properties.
  • Click the Driver tab, and then click Stop under Current Status.
  • Under Startup, in the Type box, click to select Disabled, and then click OK.
  • Close the Device Manager window.
There are a few optional fixes you can do that may improve system preformance. These fixes will not remove the program, will just stop it from starting at startup. A link and some info as to what it does is provided for each.

To impliment the optional fixes, open HJT (hijackthis), run a system scan only. Checkmark the ones you wish to keep from running at startup, close all other browsers/windows and click "Fix Checked"

Do Not fix any other lines, as that may cause problems.

You have an older, vulnerable version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 6 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Please let me know how the system is and post a new HJT (hijackthis) log.

Thanks
Hello again and thanks for the help. The computer seems to be running much better. Two concerns though: first I want to make sure I understand your last post. I am to check for the presence of c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpdtlk02.dll and fix the following in Hijack This:

Second. I am getting an error report every time I shut down Internet Explorer. I can't remember the exact phrasing but it's a common error report in blue and black font saying that "windows has incurred an error and needs to shut down…would you like to send a copy of the report to microsoft" Not a major problem just a nuisance. :D
Hi

Okay let's do this in the order you asked.

Yes, check to see if the file is present.

All the hijackthis fixes are optional. They are not malware or required fixes. By doing any of the fixes, you will only stop the program(s) from starting at startup. There will be still a way for you to start the program manually. Which ones is up to you.

For example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"

This line checks for java updates. This is something you can do manually.

From the info provided in the link

Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Visit http://java.sun.com or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel

How long have you been getting the error message? Did you send the report to MS? Sometimes it's a common error and MS has a solution.

Thanks
OK, I just wanted to make sure I understood your directions. This is my father's computer and I want to make sure I do everything right…I will take a closer look at which programs I/he want(s) to "shutdown". As for the error message - I have not sent a report to Microsoft. The message only occurred after we started cleaning up the system. Again, it only occurs when I shut down(red X) IE. Otherwise the computer is running well!
Ok, here is the scoop. Updated Adobe, "fixed" several of the programs you listed, ran filelook to find the file and will post the log underneath, could not find Mrtrate driver. I am also still getting the error report upon closing IE. :)

Hi rsre15, Are you having any problems with Quicken 2004? Do you still use the program? Can you recall what the last thing you did before the error started was? Send the error to MS. Once it's done you should get a button called "more info". Click it, a browser will open with more information about the error and a possible solution. Please post the exact message windows report and any possible solution. Please post a new HJT log. Thanks
Quicken is never used on this computer. It was one of my "fixes". Please copy and paste the link below and hopefully you will see the message I am receiving. I did send it to Microsoft. The solution is to update Windows - I did that. I will try to get the whole report for you but I am unable to copy and paste it - I will work on it. HJThis log also below.

Hi rsre15,

Did this message start to show up before or after we ran MBAM?

Open windows explorer and navigate to this folder
C:\RSIT
Click on it. In the right hand panel, please locate this file info.txt
Right click on it and click delete.

Next, right click this link RSITand select "Save target as"
Set the "Save in" box to desktop.

After it's downloaded, double click RSIT.exe on your desktop and post the 2 logs it produces, log.txt and info.txt in your next reply.

Thanks
Hello again and thanks for all of your help. The computer is still running well aside from the constant Norton updates that slow the system to a crawl. I am trying to sell my Dad on Zone Alarm but he is not buying into it. Anyway, yes I do believe the error messages started after we ran MBAM. I will follow your instructions and get back to you shortly with the logs you asked for! :D

Hi rsre15,

Let's see if this works.

Copy this down so you can refer to it
  • Close all IE browsers
  • click the start button,
  • highlight all programs,
  • highlight accessories,
  • highlight System Tools,
  • click Internet Explorer (no add ons)
This will lauuch IE without any add ones. You will get a popup notifying you that add ons are disabled. Click on the Home icon, browse to this forum, then close IE.

Please report back if the error was still present or not.

Thanks
Yes, sorry about that I have been having a bit of a problem with my own computer - just switched my ISP. Anyway, the error message is gone and everything seems to be running well!
