Are they the same size and date?
same size and same date, only one was a little later in the the day: 2008-11-04
Is the newer one in the i386 folder
Copy the one from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
TO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
Let me know if that solved it
nope- it just replaced the same file. it was same size and everything so no difference.
Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include

Save this as

It should look like this:
[external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look
here with screenshots.)
Reboot and "
copy/paste " a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Still no sound. and you know how when you go to a website in the top address bar there will be a little icon next to the webaddress? for this site there is like a blue background and a little white wheel like something that would be in a watch. normal sites usually have the little internet explorer E on a white page. now google has a exclamation mark in a orange cirlce. exactly like this site om shirt.woot.com/] but orange instead of blue. weird. doesnt do it in firefox. Heres the new log. Im gonna reinstall my audio drivers.

Lets reset the settings. All your temporary internet files, probably including navigating history, will be deleted!
Open Internet Explorer
Go to Tools and choose for Internet Options
Go to the Advanced tab
Click on Reset… and allow if any warnings are given
Let the computer do its work if it has to
Now see whether the problem has stopped. Your Add-ons are also disabled at the moment so lets enable them:
ok cool that got rid of the orange circle with the exclamation point. So- still no sound after I reinstalled the drivers. It happened after that first regedit in combofix. Can we go back? restore point or what?
Did you reboot after the last registry fix I posted?
also in internet explorer there is no longer file, edit, view, tools.
nevermind. got my menu bar back.
i have to go to work. will continue tomorrow. thanks for everything so far.
