Hi, my laptop seems to be running really slowly after it got a virus at the begining of the week.

What I've done…

I did a full scan after I realised something was wrong, and AVG found 1 virus. I then changed my DNS back to what it should be and flushed it. I then ran malawarebytes and it found 2 infections but while it was scanning it AVG popped up when it hit the two files. I removed the infections both with AVG and malawarebytes and then did another scan and nothing showed up. I reset my laptop and did a malawarebytes scan again and the same thing happened.
I also did a kaspersky online scan and it found something too but wouldn't remove it unless I paid for it. Some of the logs are below…others I accidently deleted when I uninstalled spyware doctor.

I then installed spyware doctor which found 25 infections and it got rid of those, then did a malawarebytes scan to see if AVG would pop up and it didn't but it's now running much slower…

Please help.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi There,

Thank you sooo much for you help!!!!! :wavey: :notworthy:

The computer has been running quicker since I posted the original HJT log after I visited pcpitstop and it made a couple of recommendations and I also reset my router and internet connection.

I am still worried about all the viruses it picked up and on AVG I found the Resident Shield event logger so I'll post that up (although nothing has flashed up at me since my original post as you'll see from the dates). My ipod was also acting strangely since AVG popped up at me (but I fixed that by putting it into diagnostic mode).

Many Thanks again for your help!!!

Sounds like your AVG is / was doing it's job.
Did you download something that was infected?

Your log looks clean to me.

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Yeah a friend was using the laptop - messing around on 'dodgy sites' and tried to download a game or ringtone and thats when he passed me the laptop when AVG started flashing at him (lol he was so apologetic). Fab!! Do I have the all clear then? S.
Cool. I have uninstalled ComboFix as you said. Can I put back my folder/file settings back now? Also WinPatrol has flashed up at me a couple of times…is that ok? Oh and if I have the all clear can I sign up for the classroom now? I want to be able to help other people on here and go from an intermediate to an expert lol. S.

Uninstalling CF that way, sets your files/folders back.
There's a link in my signature for the classroom.

What is WinPatrol flashing?
It flashed: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts I compared the original file and the proposed file and both the IP Addresses were the same 127.0.0.1 which is normal (lol I remembered all that off by heart) It also flashed about my browser but will put that down to combofix as it seems to be fine now (redirect to microsoft as home page). Thanks soo much for you help!! S.
