My wife's laptop has been getting progressively slower over the past several weeks. Also, the cursor sometimes lags badly behind mouse movement, and sometimes stops completely for 10-30 seconds. HJT and MBAM logs follow, I'd appreciate any input or suggestions.

Hi NyankeeC, welcome to the forum.

Please be advised, as I'm still in training, all my replies will have to be approved by a teacher or expert before I can post them. This may cause some delays, but I will do my best to keep them as short as possible.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
I will post back soon with additional instructions.

Thanks
Hi NyankeeC,

Please download and save to your desktop Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

You will need to disable your resident protection (antivirus and antispyware) for this next scan. This can usually be done from it's tray icon. You can re-enable them after the scan.
Double-click Lop S&D.exe
  • Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
  • Wait till the end of the scan
  • Post the log which is created: (%SystemDrive%\lopR.txt)

Next
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)
Please include in your next reply the LOP S&D log and both RSIT logs. Please tell me how your computer is at the moment.

Thanks
Please note that I did not rerun ATF-Cleaner.exe; I had run that prior to posting the initial logs, as suggested in the Self-help forum. Following are the requested logs:

Hi NyankeeC,

You posted the RSIT log.txt twice. Please post the info.txt. It can be found at C:\RSIT.

Nothing is really showing in these logs. Here are some optional HJT fixes that may help your overall performance.
  • If you chose to fix these, just include the line(s) in the required HJT fix below.
  • Please note that we are not removing the related file/program, just stopping it from running at startup
  • A link is provided for more info.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPNF] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchPad\TPTray.exe
Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…rch=TPNF&s=

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPSMain] TPSMain.exe
Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…=TPSMain&s=

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"
can be manually updated, Visit http://java.sun.com or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
not required, System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
Speeds up time needed for Adobe reader to load, but not required for Adobe Reader to function properly
http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list…ime+Task&s=

Required HJT fix

Open HJT, run a system scan only, check mark these lines if present

O20 - Winlogon Notify: cliclex - cliclex.dll (file missing)

Close all other browsers/windows, click fix checked, close HJT.

I see you have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).

This is not malware, but rather foistware. Foistware is something installed without your knowledge. Anything being installed without your consent is something to be suspicious of.

From Viewpoint's privacy statement

The Information That We Collect
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

I would strongly suggest you uninstall it, especially in light of this
Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware

But it's your computer and your choice. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

-Find the components in the Add and Remove Programs list and click Remove
-Close Control Panel.

You have LimeWire, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/redirect.php…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.

Please post back the ESET log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
 hi oldman960.

Apologies about the info.txt file; apparently I got my CTRL-V's and CTRL-C's mixed up between windows and pasted the contents of the log.txt file into the info.txt file; but their contents were identical when I compared them this morning. Therefore, I deleted the RSIT folder and reran this morning; below is the contents of info.txt from this run:

—> I implemented all HJT fixes, including optional.

—> I uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player, which was the only Viewpoint component appearing in the SW Uninstall list.

—> Limewire did not show up on the SW Uninstall list. I recall that my daughter had installed Limewire on this system some months ago; and I told her to uninstall it when I discovered that. In any event, a search of the hard drive uncovered C:/Program Files/Limewire/uninstall.exe; so I ran that. It said it completed successfully.

The system seems to be behaving a bit more nicely, but the real test will be when my wife uses it – I don't use this particular machine enough to have a good first-hand feel for how it should be. I'll ask her what she thinks when she next uses it, but that will likely be late this evening at best; as we have a road-trip planned for today.

Thanks for your help.

Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
  • Uninstall the old versions of Sun Java, Java JRE, or similar.
  • Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 10 if found! :yeah:
Reboot your computer.

  • Double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Please post back with the OTMOVEIT3 results.

Thanks

Hi NyankeeC,

What the wife's verdict? We can look deeper.

Download OTScanIt by OldTimer to your desktop.

Double click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All User Accounts
  • Check the Radio button for Rootkit check YES
  • Check the Radio buttons for Files/Folders Created Within 90 Days and Files/Folders Modified Within 90 Days
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:

    Reg - BotCheck
    File - Additional Folder Scans

  • Close all other windows/browsers
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.

Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post
Thanks
Hi Oldtimer960 – The wife reports the computer is running much better. I ran the utility you suggested – in the midst of running it AVG complained about C:\DOCUME~1\Mom\Locals~1\Temp\fuphlrfcPTOP.dll being detected as a Trojan upon open. I instructed AVG to vault it and proceeded on. I ended up with two different logs in the OTScanIt folder; so I attempted to attach them both. However, the upload of CatchMe.log failed; saying "You are not permitted to upload this type of file". NyankeeC

Hi NyankeeC,

That's Ok, the CatchMe.log is included in the OTScanit.txt.

Start OTScanit. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button

Thanks for your continued help.
Hi Nyankee,

You are more than welcome. These logs look Ok. How is everything? If no problems, we can clean up the tools I had you download.

From your desktop (I see RSIT is in a folder on your desktop), please delete
  • RSIT.exe
  • Lop S&D.exe
You can also delete these
  • C:\lopR.txt
  • C:\rsit
  • C:\Lop SD
ESET online scanner can be removed via add/remove programs if you wish.

Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it, then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTMoveIt2 wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will delete all the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

Delete OTMOVEIT3.exe and OTScanit.exe if they are still present.

When you moved the file to the AVG Virus Vault it was deleted from its original location, coded, and then saved in a non-executable file in a hidden folder. If you are not missing any data file and your applications are running, then you can delete these vaulted files from the AVG Virus Vault program.
You can do it selectively from
  • AVG Virus Vault program
  • select files
  • delete
Or you can delete all AVG Virus Vault contents in one go:
  • Double-click the AVG icon on your desktop
  • choose the "History" menu
  • select the "Virus Vault" option
  • click on the "Empty Vault" button

I suggest you keep ATF and MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it as an on demand scanner.

Now we'll remove the old infected System Restore Points. This will remove all old restore points.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

* Updates and Upgrades

* If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

* You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

Uncheck the Google Tool bar if you don't want it.
click the download button

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 7 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

* I recommend you use an antispyware program with resident (real time) scanning. You could accomplish this by enabling Spybot's teatimer.

For instructions, click Here

OR use one of these also free ones

Winpatrol OR
Windows Defender

Note: If enabling or installing one of these programs causes slowdowns, just disable the resident protection.

You have SpywareBlaster, use it.
- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL for tips, reviews and links to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

-Secure your Internet Explorer

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
