I haven't done this in a long time so just concerned if I've been hit with spyware/malware/etc. Plus been getting spam messages from friends on MSN Messanger (sure the problem is on their end not mine) but just want to be sure my hardware is clean. Thanks for the help.

Hi badpapa

My name is revel and I will be looking at your HJT log.

As I am still in training, all of my instructions must be checked by one of our malware experts before they are given to you. Thus, there may be some delay in responding. I know that you would like your computer working as quickly as possible and I will work hard to see that happen.

Before we begin, please review these important notes:
  • The fixes are specific to your machine and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your machine is clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't understand the instructions, please stop and ask for clarification before proceeding.
  • Continue to reply to this topic; do not start another.

I will be back as soon as possible with instructions.
Hi badpapa

Your log indicates that you have two antivirus running, BitDefender and Avira. Having an antivirus is essential but running two can cause conflicts, false alarms, and hinder system performance. I recommend that you uninstall either BitDefender or Avira though the choice of which is up to you. However, if you have a paid-for version of either program, I would keep that one and uninstall the other.

To uninstall the antivirus program of your choice, please use Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

———–

You should also consider removing these:
  • Ad-Aware - The version that you are running is outdated. Follow the instructions here to remove and update Ad-Aware >> How to update Ad-Aware 2007 to Ad-Aware 2008.

  • Viewpoint -

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are components that are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Find the components in the Add and Remove Programs list and click Remove
  • Close Control Panel.

    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

  • Click Exit. on the Main menu to close the program.
———–

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform quick scan" then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click Ok, then Show Results to view the findings.
  • >>Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When this process completes, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to reboot. If a reboot is required, please save any open documents or work and then reboot.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in the program.

Hi badpapa

It looks like MBAM found some stuff. Unfortunately, one of those infections has the ability to steal passwords. As a precaution I advise you to change all passwords for your online accounts immediately (including ebay, email, forums, etc.) from a clean computer.

When you've done that:

Update Java -
Your Java is outdated and now a security risk. Please do the following to update:
  • Go to the Java SE Download page >> HERE <<
  • Click on Free Java Download
  • Click on the Free Java Download button again and save the installation file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs that you may have running, including your web browser(s)
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall All previous versions of Java (include any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in its name)
  • Repeat as necessary to remove each Java version that is listed
  • When all components are removed, reboot your computer
  • To install the new version, double-click on the installation file that you saved to your desktop

Update Acrobat Reader -
Older versions of Acrobat Readers contain security vulnerabilities.
To update Acrobat Reader to the current version, please visit: Adobe Reader Download

Next, please do the following scan:

NOTE: In the event that you already have Combofix, it is essential that you delete it and download a new copy.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they may otherwise interfere with our tools. This is usually done via a right-click on the program's System Tray icon.

  • Double-click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making IE the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

In your next reply, please provide:
(1) Combofix log
(2) a new HijackThis log
Here are the 2 new logs

Hi badpapa
Good work so far. We have just a bit more to do..

  • Please close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not intefere with the running of Combofix.
  • Open notepad (Start > Run > type notepad)
  • Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

    Folder::
    c:\program files\Viewpoint

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "Start Page"="http://www.msn.com"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "{0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0}"=-
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{070CA17A-4BD2-4612-83B4-32B1B9159B47}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{070CA17A-4BD2-4612-83B4-32B1B9159B47}]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
    "appinit_dlls"=""

  • Save this notepad to your desktop as "CFScript.txt" and as Type: All Files (*.*).
  • Referring to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe. This will start Combofix.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt.

———————————————

Next, I need you to run an online Kaspersky Scan -
  • Temporarily disable your resident antivirus to prevent it from interfering with this scan.

:: IMPORTANT :: With your resident antivirus disabled, I advise you not to use the internet for any purpose aside from the scan below.

Note: Internet Explorer is recommended for this scan
  • Visit this link >> Kaspersky <<
  • Read the requirements and privacy statement and click Accept
  • The scanner and virus definitions will start downloading. When prompted to install an ActiveX by Kaspersky, click Run
  • When the downloads have completed, click on Settings
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked; if not, please tick them and click on the Save button.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Under Scan, click on My Computer
  • Be patient, this scan may take a while depending upon the number of files to scan.
  • When the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As…
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt). Click on the Save button and save the report to your desktop or other convenient location.
  • :: IMPORTANT :: Re-enable your Resident Antivirus

———————————————
Run HiJackThis
  • Create a new HijackThis log >> "Do a system scan and save a logfile" then
  • Create an Uninstall List using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager, do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save a notepad will open with the contents. Save the notepad file to your desktop.

In your next reply, please provide:
(1) ComboFix.txt
(2) Kaspersky scan results
(3) New HijackThis log & Uninstall list
(4) Also, tell me how your system is running
Hi revel,

The system seems to be running fine. There wasn't really an issue with how it ran prior to what we've done over the last couple of days. If I notice anything, I'll bring it up to you.
*edit* Actually I've been getting these pop-ups from BitDefender stating "Portscan block" then gives an IP address ([removed] was the last one). I'm not sure what the cause is, if it is some type of spyware or something but I continue to get these messages. The computer is running fine, no random pop ups from websites or other problems with my system that I notice.

Here are the new logs:

Hi badpapa
Your firewall is doing its job as far as blocking ports and intrusion detection. It's hard to say whether your computer is being targeted specifically or randomly scanned. The ip that you provided is of Chinese origin which you can check at Sam Spade.

I see you have a number of P2P clients installed. Though the file sharing programs are usually clean, peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware and virus infections and you are exposing yourself to these risks. For that reason I recommend that you remove them but if you insist on using P2P programs then be sure to configure them properly and keep your antivirus and protection software updated.

  • Remove Programs
Using Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel, remove:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

  • Submit Files for Analysis
  • Click on this link: Jottis
  • At the very top of the Jotti page, click the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

    c:\windows\imsins.BAK

  • When you have located this file, click Submit and the file will be uploaded to the site and analysed.
  • Please provide me with the results of the analysis (copy/paste) in your next reply.

In your next response, please provide:
Results of the Jottis scan

regards, revel
Hi revel, With that the case, firewall doing its job, would that mean it is safe to check things like bank accounts on this machine. I've been doing it on a cleaner computer while you have been helping me–just to be on the safe side. Here is the Jottis scan results: le: imsins.BAK Status: OK MD5: 2fee2066c49a1d9c4cb37fb9ac24e9af Packers detected: - Scanner results Scan taken on 24 Nov 2008 02:03:13 (GMT) A-Squared Found nothing AntiVir Found nothing ArcaVir Found nothing Avast Found nothing AVG Antivirus Found nothing BitDefender Found nothing ClamAV Found nothing CPsecure Found nothing Dr.Web Found nothing F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing F-Secure Anti-Virus Found nothing G DATA Found nothing Ikarus Found nothing Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing NOD32 Found nothing Norman Virus Control Found nothing Panda Antivirus Found nothing Sophos Antivirus Found nothing VirusBuster Found nothing VBA32 Found nothing
Hi badpapa

With that the case, firewall doing its job, would that mean it is safe to check things like bank accounts on this machine.

Your logs are clean. A few posts back I mentioned that you should change any passwords that you may use (for banking, forums, email, etc.). This was because one of the infections cleared from your computer had the potential of stealing that information. Obviously I can't guarantee that you are going to be 100% safe. While there is no indication of an active infection on your machine the best thing to do is exercise caution. Keep your protection software updated and run scans regularly. I've provided you some extra recommendations below.

  • Remove Combofix

  • Click Start > Run
  • In the Run box, type Combofix /u then click Ok. Refer to the picture below:

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Note the space between the X and the /u, it needs to be there.
Please review the following recommendations to keep your computer malware-free.

  • : Windows Updates :
Keep your operating system fully updated to protect your system from any security threats. Malware writers often exploit vulnerabilities in unpatched systems. If you do not have your system set to receive security & critical updates automatically, I encourage you to visit Microsoft Updates on a regular basis to check for any recommended updates for your OS and IE. To view your Windows Update policy, simply RIGHT-click on My Computer > Properties > Select the "Automatic Updates" tab.

  • : Antivirus :
Be sure to keep your antivirus installed and updated. Without updates, your antivirus will not be able to protect your system from new threats.

  • : Additional Anti-Spyware :
There are a number of free programs available that are designed to help you protect your system from malware. I have listed a few of these programs below and highly recommend that you install one or more of the programs. Note: Always check for updates before running scans. If the program has an option to auto-check for updates, enable it.

    • SpywareBlaster - A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster may be found here
    • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - This program is a good tool to keep around for on-demand scanning as well as routine scanning. Be sure to check for updates before scanning your system.
    • WinPatrol 2007 - A tutorial on using WinPatrol may be found at the creator's website, Here
  • : Consider using a HOSTS file :
A Hosts file will prevent your computer from any known malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. You may download the MVPS Hosts File by clicking >> HERE <<. A tutorial is also available as well as tips and links to other resources.

  • : Make your Internet Explorer more secure :
    1. In Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu > Options
    2. Click on the Security tab
    3. Click the Internet icon so that it becomes highlighted
    4. Click on Default Level and click OK
    5. Click on the Custom Level button

Change the "Download signed Active X controls" to Prompt
Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX controls" to Disable
Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to Disable
Change the "Installation of desktop items" to Prompt
Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt

When these settings have been made, click on Ok button.

    6. Press the Apply button and then the Ok to exit the Internet Properties page

Please read Tony Klein's article on How I got Infected in the First Place.
Another article you should read through is How to prevent Malware.

Thanks for providing all of the information I have asked you for.
