Can you tell me if I have the correct settings for scanning with HJT? I fear that something is undetected in scans. I have AVG Anti Spyware, Norton Security and Adaware... all scans appear clean as far as I can tell, but I am not a pro at this... :(

Hello warbler and welcome back to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

all scans appear clean

Based upon the above and the analysis of your HijackThis log that I have just completed, I am relatively confident that your system is clean.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make sure you keep your Windows OS currentby visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

2. I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Regards,

Trevuren

Thank you for your assistance and very quick reply!!!!! I do have spywareblaster but not S&D because it always seems to disagree with Norton... Is there a fix for that? I will read over the recommended pinned threads. I regularly update windows too. I will look at MVPS, Spyad and Spyware guard because I do not have those... Again your help is so appreciated.

Another thing to mention is that when booting up this morning, the Dell screen sat idle for nearly 20 minutes, I hit ctrl alt del to start again and it booted fine but still very slow. I have just over a 1/3 of disk space left... could that have a bearing on performance? I have done disk cleanup and compressed old files... I think Norton is taking a good portion of working space on my rather vintage model.... My dear DH will want the computer to die completely before replacing it so I am starting, to build a case for upgrading. Can you advise?

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
  • An additional text file, Extra.txt, will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
  • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.
Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

What DSS will do:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.

Post Logs:
  • DSS Scan Results: contents of 1) Main.txt and 2) Extra.txt

1. Your current version of HijackThis is fine. TrendMicro have a version that provides a bit more information but we do not need it here.

2. You do have a small hard drive and Symantec is really bulky and a huge resource hog. You could go with AVG Free Antivirus and a firewall like Comodo to lighten the load.

3. After using your virtual memory that is set at 2 GB, you really only have 10% of storage to play with.

I must agree with you. A larger Hard Drive would be nice and, if you can afford it, another 512 of RAM would not hurt either.

Hope this helps a bit,

Trevuren
