Judging from a search of these forums, this thing is going around.

Was surfing the internet, all of the following happened very quickly.

Norton notified me I was infected by a trojan (don't remember the name). Then notified me the issue was resolved.

Started getting the bubble notification in the system tray that I had an infection. Asked to click on it, at which point "Antivirus 2009" was installed and started scanning.

Only after opening google so I could search and figure out what the heck this Antivirus 2009 was did I realize that every link in the search results was redirecting me to the same go.google.com address. Tried using Yahoo instead, but was redirected to go.yahoo addresses.

Thought it'd be a good idea to run a scan. Tried to open Spybot…nothing. AVG Anti-Spyware…nothing. Programs wouldn't open.

Back to google. Searched again. Copy/pasted urls into the address bar instead of clicking the link. That worked. Saw that others had used Malwarebytes to get rid of the bug, so I downloaded it and ran it. Removed the nasties. Restarted.

Am now able to search Google without being redirected and can run all of my Anti-Malware/Spyware/Virus programs without any problems.

*EDIT*

Saved the above message to notepad and closed my browser so I could run HJT. Ran it. Opened Firefox again so I could log in here and post this message and the HJT log and it turns out I was getting the go.google redirect AGAIN.

Ran Malwarebytes. Removed the baddies again. Had to reboot. Here's the Log of the SECOND Malwarebytes removal in case it will be helpful.

Hello

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Thansk for the quick reply! i ran ComboFix. The log is below.

A couple things worth mentioning:

- I could not figure out how to disable Norton Internet Security, so ran ComboFix with it running. The license is expired (probably not a good thing in this situation, eh?) and I can't click the "settings" button to disable it…I'm guessing that's because it isn't licensed? (What a dirty trick to get you to subscribe!)

- I disabled SpyBot S&D before running ComboFix. However, the system had to reboot so ComboFix could finish and Spybot ran on startup as usual. It detected a bunch of changes to startup items and browser changes (I think?). I figured these were a result of ComboFix making changes and allowed the changes to be made. I hope that's right?

- Also..I didn't mention it in my rambling first post, but the internet site I clicked on right before getting the initial infection messages tried to open a .pdf file automatically. My browser and computer froze for a good number of minutes while it tried to open. Thought that info might be handy

Here's the log…

Save this as CFScript.txt

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box–do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • A browser will open.
  • Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.
I didn't get get a message box and my browser didn't pop up so I could send the file for analsysis. Spybot still recognizing changes to my registry (values deleted) when I startup…normal I suppose?

Here's the ComboFix log

Thanks for all the help!

- I do have a zip file on my desktop. It's for a program for colorblind people. :)
- I uninstalled the expired Norton. Had be meaning to anyway, but since Kaspersky suggested I turn off other anti-virus (and I couldn't) I just uninstalled it.

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

*ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

*NoScript - Addon for Firefox that stops all scripts from running on websites. Stops malicious software from invading via flash, java, javascript, and many other entry points.

*Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here
