Hi all,

I am trying to get my Dad's PC fixed (by Long Distance no less, he is in Maryland - I am in Florida), but I have reached a point where I do not know what to do anymore!
So I am posting a HiJack This log for help.
I think he has one or more worms and other stuff.
It is hard to get a good explaination of what the exact problem is out of him.
I had him run AdAware and Norton Internet Security (which is installed on his PC), but he says they didn't find anything. I have had him use Autoruns from SystemInternals to turn off a lot of stuff that was starting up when he started the PC.
I also used HijackThis to create a startup list and it shows things that I think are keyloggers and worms,
but I am at a dead-end as to what to do now!
I can post the other logs also if needed?

Here is a snippet of the Autoruns stuff that makes me think he has Keyloggers:

Hi SweetNuttin,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Yeppers, it looks like you got yourself a keylogger. Any clue who installed it?

Please either print out these instructions for reference or copy/paste them in notepad and save to your desktop for access when in safe mode

Make all files and folders visible
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

We must disable certain protection programs that may interfere with our fix:
http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_to_Disab…ams_t89859.html

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5BAB4B5B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - (no file)
      O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinSysCheck] WinSysCheck.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Scan32Sys] Scan32Sys.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CDPreLoader] CDPreLoader.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System32DOS] System32DOS.exe
      O9 - Extra button: MUSICMATCH MX Web Player - {d81ca86b-ef63-42af-bee3-4502d9a03c2d} - http://wwws.musicmatch.com/mmz/openWebRadio.html (file missing)
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinSysCheck.exe <–This file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Scan32Sys.exe <–This file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CDPreLoader.exe <–This file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32DOS.exe <–This file
C:\Program Files\ExploreAnywhere <–This folder

Don't be concerned if you don't find these folders. It just means that it was already removed in a previous step.

Restart your computer normally.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Tomk,

Herewith the logs from MBAM and a new HJT log.
Tried to post again yesterday but it told me I shud have had my Dad use HJT 2 instead of 1.

Thank you,

Sue

SweetNuttin,

Exactly what type of malware does this pgm check for

Smitfraud, Fakealert, Zlob, and Wareout.

what does "not inevitably infected" really mean??

It means it is a listing of the keys. Not just infected keys.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Also please post a new HijackThis log.
Tomk, Here is a document that I created from Siri's site for getting the latest version of the program and it also tells you what to do. Of course you can modify it for the people you send it to or have them read it. Just my way of thanking you for helping me and my Dad! Sue  ;>)
SweetNuttin, Thanks (?) When I click on the link I gave you, I don't go to any webpage. French or otherwise. I go to the download site that is the first link on the page you referenced in the document you attached. I don't know why you got something different but you did download and run the current version of SmitfraudFix so it's all good.
Tomk,

The link to the Java website takes me to a "archived" version of JRE 6u7.
When I look elsewhere on their site it has a JRE 6 Update 10 as currrent version.

Java SE Downloads

Should I have my Dad download the update-10 one?
And are your following instructions the same for the newer version??

Thanks,
Sue
SweetNuttin, JRE 6 update 7 is the last security update. JRE 6 update 10 is formatted a little different and adds a service to the system (thus using a few resources). I still recommend JRE6 update 7. JRE 6 update 10 will work just fine. This isn't going very well from my side. In each case I have provided you with a link to what I'd like you to run. In each case you have told me I'm wrong. It is your computer and you should only do with it what you want. I would like you to be comfortable with the process. Maybe the fly-in-the-ointment here is me. If you wish, I can close this thread. You can then post again and get a different helper. Please let me know if you would like to continue.
Tomk, Sorry if you have gotten offended. I am not trying to tell you where you are wrong, cause I really don't know. I am just trying to understand the process so I can also be a better computer user. My Dad is in his 60's and in order for me to tell him what to do, (remember, I am doing this long distance), I have to be able to understand it and walk him thru it. I am just using plain ole common sense when you send me to get something and it says 'archived', I question why and just look around the web site for what the latest version is and would then like to know if it is better to use the newer version vice the older one. I am normally a very inquisitive person and just like to know why I am doing something and what the reason and expected outcome is supposed to be. SO yes, I would like you to continue and now that you have told me what the newer version of Java uses, I will have him download that and install it. Again, thank you very much for your help!! Sue
SweetNuttin,

I'm not actually offended. I want you to be comfortable with the process. I also had forgotten that you are doing this across the country from the computer. That is actually harder than what I'm doing because I get to see the logs that I need. I'm OK if your OK. I honestly just didn't want you to be stuck with me
if you were uncomfortable.

By the way, I also think this is admirable.

I am just trying to understand the process so I can also be a better computer user.

I think after you pull this off long distance, you should consider joining the classroom and learning to do this as a hobby.

I am normally a very inquisitive person and just like to know why I am doing something and what the reason and expected outcome is supposed to be.

I'm the same way. Don't get me wrong. You are entitled to know what is being done to your computer. You haven't asked any inappropriate questions. I was a little confused but when I factor in that you are working the computer in the third person, it makes total sense. Sorry for muddying the waters further.
