I am using windows xp, ran hyjack this system scan and found several unidentified items. I need the experts to review this system scan for any possible correct entries. Thanks for any help that can be provided. System was very slow to boot today, getting a lot of port scans being picked up on firewall.

Hi scott777.
My name is revel and I will be working with you to resolve the issues you're experiencing.

As I am still in training, all of my instructions must be checked by one of our malware experts before they are given to you. Thus, there may be some delay in responding. I know that you would like your computer working as quickly as possible and I will work hard to see that happen.

I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • The fixes are specific to your machine and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your machine is clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't understand the instructions, please stop and ask for clarification before proceeding.
  • Continue to reply to this topic; do not start another.

I will be back as soon as possible with instructions.
Hi scott777,

… found several unidentified items

>> Let me know which specific items in your log you are concerned about.

I don't see an antivirus running. For your benefit, you need to install an antivirus before we can continue. Antivirus software can actively defend your system in realtime by detecting and removing harmful files. I have provided some links below where you can download and install an antivirus program. The programs are free but please select only ONE to install on your system. Having more than one antivirus can affect system performance, result in program conflicts, and possibly produce false alerts.

When you have installed an antivirus program, please do the following:
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >> HERE << and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)

In your next reply, please provide:
(1) both RSIT logs; log.txt and info.txt

regards,
revel
I am using an anti virus program, it is included with the Zone Alarm suite. I already ran it today and it did not pick up any viruses.
See logs below from RSIT.exe

Hi scott777

I already ran it today and it did not pick up any viruses.

Thanks for providing this information. At this point, I'm not seeing anything in your logs that is malware-related.

… found several unidentified items

>> Let me know which specific items in your log you are concerned about.

Again, please let me know which items in your log you are unsure about.

Please do the following:
  • MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Scan
I see that you have installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Did you run a scan with MBAM? If so, please provide the scan log in your next reply. To retrieve the scan log:

    • Open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program.
    • Click on the Logs tab.
    • Double-click on the entry at the top of the list to open the log.
    • Copy/Paste the contents of the scan in your next reply.

    =================
  • Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.

      If you use Firefox browser
      • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
      If you use Opera browser
      • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    • Click Exit. on the Main menu to close the program.
    =================
  • Next, run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
    • Visit this link >> HERE <<
    • Check the box to accept the Terms of Use
    • Click Start
    • When asked to install the ActiveX control, allow the install
    • Click Start
    • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
    • Click Scan. Be patient, the scan may take some time
    • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
    • Copy/paste the log in your next reply
    =================
  • Open HijackThis and "Do a system scan and save a log file." Copy/paste the new log into your next reply.
In your next reply, please provide:
(1) MBAM log (if you performed a scan)
(2) ESET scan log
(3) a new HijackThis log
(4) Please let me know which items in your log you are unsure about.

Hi Scott777

Did you run any of the scans in my last instruction?
Your logs look okay but running the scans will help to confirm that your system is clean.

Please revisit my previous post and provide the scan logs requested.

Also, please do the following:

Show Hidden Files/Folders
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Under the heading "Hidden files and folders" select Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
  • Click Yes to confirm, then click Ok

Using Windows Explorer, click the Search button. Select "All files and folders" and type in dimsntfy.dll in the file name. Look in Local Disk (C:), then click Search.

Let me know whether the file was found on your system.

In your next reply, please provide
(1) Malwarebytes' scan log (if you performed a scan)
(2) ESET online scan results
(3) a new HijackThis log
(4) search results for dimsntfy.dll

4.) Search for dimsntfy.dll, found two files: one in Windows\32 and one in windows\servicepackfiles\i386.

Also, you did not answer my question to the six entries I needed to identify in previous post.
Thanks for posting the logs. Please provide the results of the ESET scan in your next reply.

All of the entries that you have listed are legitimate items. The O9s and the O11 entry refer to buttons/menu items and options for Internet Explorer and only apply when you are using that browser. The messenger entries launch MSN Messenger and the Windows Network Diagnostic launches the diagnostic program to help troubleshoot network connection problems. As far as the O11 entry, if you open Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab, you should see a group named 'International.' You won't notice any performance improvement by fixing these entries.

Last, the O20 is a legitimate windows system file (Look here).

In your next reply, please provide
(1) ESET scan results
