Hmmmm…I'm not sure how I did that?? Unless I forgot to run it as administrator and it popped up the last log?? oh well…here is the new one. :-)

Nope…still showing the outdated version of Java.


Lets do this:

Please run RavaJa again. Here are the instructions for its use. Make sure you "Run as Administrator":

Update Java using JavaRa

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Lets start with this and make sure everything gets removed.

Once you have run JavaRa, please post a new HijackThis log, along with the JavaRa log. Once I see everything is gone, then I will have you update to the new version.

I do have another question for you my subscription for Norton runs out in 7 days and I was wondering if you think this is a good virus protection or if there is something out there you would recommend over Norton? Since you are the expert and all :notworthy:

Java is being stubborn…. :angry:

Log still shows update 6….

I would like for you to look in the uninstall list and see if this entry is still there:

Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6

If it is, uninstall it manually:
  • click Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs
  • Once you have completed removing the above prgrams, you may exit the Control Panel

As far as the Anti-Virus goes, there are several good anti-virus programs out there. These are the three that I would recommend:

AntiVir
Avast
BitDefender

These are all free for personal use.

When it is time to remove Norton, Please use the Norton Removal Tool as Norton is known for leaving behind a bunch of tidbits after it is removed.

Just so you know, the reason I am not leaving the Java issue alone is that old versions of Java present a security risk that can be exploited. It is important to get you updated with the latest version. If it wasn't for this, then I would have cut you loose a little while ago. Please hang in there and we will get this knocked out. Thanks for being patient!

Let me know if you were able to uninstall Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6. If you would like, go ahead and uninstall that first and then post another HijackThis log so I can make sure it is gone. Then I will give you the OK to update to the new version.

Once again, let me know if you run into any problems….

OK….I went into the control panel and what is listed is Java ™ update 7 and Java ™ update 10. I attempted to ininstall both of them and it does not allow me to. It starts the uninstall process and then just stops.

I owe you an apology…..I have been sending you on a wild goose chase…..Java is in fact updated: :smack:

This is an example of the old version from one of your previous logs:

How is your system running? Are you still having problems? Please let me know if any problems still exist before moving on.

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Remove dangerous tools - Because some tools we used can be dangerous if they're used in the wrong way we have to remove some of them. Please remove the following tools:

Uninstall Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Cleanup with OTMoveIt

  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the program.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Update your Anti Virus Software - I would highly recommend that you set your Anti-Virus software to update automatically. Most Anti-Virus programs will update at least once a day, and frequently more than once a day. If you notice that it isn't updating itself regularly and frequently, you should check to make sure your anti-virus subscription has not expired (if it's a paid subscription) or that your settings have not spontaneously changed.

Turn on "Automatic Updates" - In order to make sure your system stays up to date, I recommend that you turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature. To turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature please do the following:
  • Click Start and choose Control Panel
  • In the control panel double click "Windows Updates"
  • Click on "Change Settings" on the left hand side of the screen
  • Make sure "Automatic (recommended)" is ticked
  • set the time that you would like to check for updates
  • Click "OK"

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer including those for Microsoft Office, etc. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:

The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:

Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

OK…. I've completed everything listed and I did install WinPatrol. I've also removed my Norton using the Norton removal. Do you still recomend using one of the following with WinPatrol or does Winpatrol cover everything? thank you so much my computer is running so much better and guess what???? No pop ups!!! :-D

I am glad things are better. As far as Winpatrol and the Anti-Virus programs goes….Yes, you still need to install a different Anti-Virus program. Winpatrol is a supplemental application that will watch for any changes that are being made, any time a program try's to alter any settings or set itself to start automatically it will alert you. An Anti-Virus application is still needed to make sure you do not become re-infected. Personally I use AntiVir and have been very happy with it. Any one of the 3 programs that I suggested should work just fine for you. Please let me know if you need anything else, if not then I will archive this topic. I am glad I was able to help you.
