I was told I had trojans and had trojan removers installed. My computer has been getting slower and slower and now I have lost my google toolbar. It is still installed but will not come back up. All my research points to a registry problem. A lot of programs were added to my computer by a self taught "guru" some I can't even get to work. Please Help. Here is my Log

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I followed your instructions to the T. I have a couple questions. Do I need to go back and check the
"Hide file extensions for known file types." and "Hide protected operating system files." ? Also on reboot I got
a message telling me my "System Config Utility has changed" and that I should go back and change it from "selective"
to "normal" startup. I had gone in before all this and removed the my space and yahoo messengers and winamp from the start up menu. Do I need to go and change it to Normal start up?

As for the computer performance it seems better. I'm eager to start digging into some research to see how well it will move. I did get the google toolbar back. It was slow to reboot. Slower than usual but I was expecting it due to the ATF Cleaner. It warns that it may run slower for the next couple of reboots.
(The Anti-Malware found another trojan)
Below is my hijack log.
How does it look now?

Thank You!!
Cheryl :woot:

I have a couple questions. Do I need to go back and check the
"Hide file extensions for known file types." and "Hide protected operating system files." ?

Not yet

Also on reboot I got
a message telling me my "System Config Utility has changed" and that I should go back and change it from "selective"
to "normal" startup. I had gone in before all this and removed the my space and yahoo messengers and winamp from the start up menu. Do I need to go and change it to Normal start up?

Don't worry about that. Leave it like you have it.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
AskBar
AskBarDis

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Again I followed your instructions. I didn't have the "AskBar" or
"AskBarDis" but I did have the "AskToolBar" . I went ahead and
removed it since I have my Google toolbar back.

As for the computer's behavior, it is running a bit faster than before
but when I click on a link the page still takes a while to show up
and then it is slow to load.

Here is my current log:

Please download HostsXpert from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Double Click HostsXpert.exe.

you have to click: ''make hosts writable'' in the top right corner, then press the ''restore MS hosts file'' option

Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I have a couple more questions. I noticed a couple things on my computer that I hadn't noticed before. When I pull up "System" from the control panel, under the system info is "Manufactured and Supported by:" (and the logo..)."Brain X"
also when I pull up "Start up" from the control anel it reads "Start Up Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin" Do you know where these came from?
Also it appears my system config went back to "Normal". Leave it alone for now or can I change it back to selective?

Below is my current log.

Thank You!!
Cheryl :woot:

I noticed a couple things on my computer that I hadn't noticed before. When I pull up "System" from the control panel, under the system info is "Manufactured and Supported by:" (and the logo..)."Brain X"
also when I pull up "Start up" from the control anel it reads "Start Up Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin" Do you know where these came from?

My guess is: by a self taught "guru". They are OK though.

Also it appears my system config went back to "Normal". Leave it alone for now or can I change it back to selective?

It's up to you

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
