[sleepyvader]

Ran Malwarebytes AntiMalware and found Adware-Alert. Ran Spybot S&D and found another entry. Ran Iolo System Mechanic and found Hijacker parasite it called "DyFuca". Attempted to have System Mechanic remove parasite.and got BSOD. Restarted in safe mode and ran System Mechanic again and got BSOD when trying to remove parasite.
Also cannot change desktop background or view thumbnails in file viewer.
Gratefully appreciate any assistance offered.

hi sleepyvader, if system mechanic is giving you a BSOD then i would: contact them or uninstall it system mechanic includes a malware component? i would rely on the results you get from malwarebytes, spybot and superantispyware, not system mechanic. is malwarebyes coming up clean after a scan?

shelflife, Thank you for your reply. Yes, System Mechanic claims to be able to remove spyware. It doesn't seem to. I am ashamed that I spent good money on it. I will remove it post haste. I say only this in my defense, "Desperate men do desperate things". I could attach a screenshot of System Mechanic if it's allowed. I would include Malwarebytes log if I knew how. Malwarebytes is what found the original problem, then I ran three more scans with clean results and a last full scan in safe mode. where it found two more items and removed them. I am afraid I have botched any repair attempts I made so I throw myself on your tender mercies. I have spent the last three evenings with MS Support trying to gain control of my desktop background and have uninstalled Vist SP1 and my anti-virus program (F-Prot) at their suggestion. hi sleepyvader, you can post a malwarebytes log like this: launch malwarebytes and check for updates first. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt if malwarebytes is coming up clean then i wouldnt worry about posting a log. I wouldnt be concerned with what system mechanic is finding as far as malware goes. nobody recommends system mechanic as malware removal software. As far as what it claims to do you could most likely do yourself anyway. i dont see any malware in the hjt log. but a hjt log dosnt show all malware. once again you must rely on your antivirus and your proven antimalware apps first. (and not system mechanic)

look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall: Viewpoint Manager (installed as a third party add-on)

you can remove the bho if you want using hjt:

start HJT, click "Do a system scan only" put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click "fix checked".

your welcome. yes i think we are done. keep malwarebytes and always check for updates before scanning. as for the desktop, iam not very familiar with the vista OS-- some suggestions: you could google it or visit Dells website, they have good help/troubleshooting/search sections and even forums.
since its been a few days why not post one more hjt log for a final look. there is a newer version of hjt, which is better suited for the vista OS. you can get it here:

Well, I never did figure out what was wrong. I gave up, backed up my hard drive and restored to factory settings. Slowly transferred files to the new install and reinstalled my programs. Just about back to normal. Two weeks of my life in the recycle bin.
Not really, this little jaunt has taught me some valuable lessons and I thank you again for your time and expertise.
Computer seems OK, still have to finish Windows Updates.
MBAM comes up clean, F-Prot comes up clean, Spybot and AdAware are happy so here is my last HJT scan.

ok good. glad to help. looks like you have it all under control. you should back up files you cant afford to lose, documents, pics, etc. dosnt have to be the entire hard drive. its really a just in case. options: are inexpensive usb flash drive, dvd/cd media even free (1GB) web storage:

dont forget to update java;

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.

* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

My Top Ten List
The Short Version:

1)Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons.
3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or installing files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you install software to your computer.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include visiting or downloading/installing files from: warez, crack sites or p2p (file sharing) networks: then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?
