Hello there,
I have been infected with a virus that continuously tells me that I have a security problem. It shows up in a bubble and if clicked on starts what looks to be a scan of my pc. I have Panda, use Spybot S&D, Crapcleaner, yet I still have been infected. I also have my windows updated automatically as with my other programs. Please help. I have read of others with this same problem so I have downloaded Hijackthis and will attach a log of the scan. Thanks for any and all help you can give me.

Howdy pc storm and welcome to the forums,

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
  • Click on the Save list… button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks
Chuck

  • Double click on HJTInstall.exe to install it. Click on Install. By default, it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • Read through the License Agreement presented to you on the next screen and click on I Accept.
  • Once installed, HijackThis will start automatically. If it doesn't, please go to your desktop and double click on the HijackThis shortcut created there.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

I unfortunately do not have the WinXP OS. I did not get one when I bought my laptop. Is there any way around this? I sure hope so. I have attached a HJT log and also an mbam-log from today. Thanks for working this through with/for me. pcstorm

Howdy pc storm, Laptops typically have a Recovery Partition that can be used to reset the system back to factory defaults. We can access that if needed. We shouldn't need a Windows CD. Would you please run the Combofix for me and post it the log/report along with a new HJT log! Just follow instructions above for Combofix. Post these: 1. Combofix log/report 2. New HJT log Thanks Chuck

Howdy pc storm, great job !

Congratulation you are clean !!!

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Free Antivirus; I use Avast !!
avast! 4 Home Edition
AntiVir Free Edition

Free firewalls:
1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor
3) PC Tools
4) Sunbelt/Kerio
5) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Stand Up and Be Counted —> Malware Complaints <— where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Happy surfing !

How is it running, any problems ??

Thanks
Chuck
Good morning Chuck, My pc is running ok except that it is now running slowly. I followed your instructions at the end of your last post and am running the programs suggested. Now when I use the net my pc slowly gets to the pages and also is generally slow to respond to the commands I give it, e.g. going from a web page to a doc. opening another page than the one I am currently on. I've defragged to make sure everything is lined up and still my pc is slow. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks again. pc storm
Hello pc storm, i need to know what programs you downloaded that i suggested, so i can determine
what might be causing it to run slow, is it still slow ??

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Sorry but real life has been busy !

Thanks
Chuck
Hello flashh4, This is quite a late reply to your last post. Originally my pc seemed to be running very slowly but I've since found out it was due to my internet server (router problems). The original problem I had with being infected has been resolve by you and again I'd like to say Thank-you. Also let me know if when I donate is it into a pool where it is shared by all who help us out or does it go to the individual that I'd like to donate to? Let me know because I would like to donate to this site because whenever I need help with a problem, someone at What the Tech always manages to help me out and I really appreciate it. Again thanks and I will definitely get back here if needed. Keep up the great work, Alain
