My son attempted to download and install a codex in order to watch a movie - apparently the link he got was very bad. The computer will not boot up now. If anyone can help we would be very grateful! He did this to his step-dad's computer. I can provide the link where the "bad" codex came from. Please help!
A few more details: My son tells me that as soon as he realized there was something wrong he ran malware bytes and ATF cleaner. I am able to get to the log in screen and type the password. At the bottom of the window near the windows clock it shows the words VIRUS ALERT…before the system finishes loading it flashes a blue screen with a bunch of white text for about 1 second then reboots immediately…I can't even read what is on the blue screen.
I attempted restarting in safe mode but that blue screened as well. I attempted to do a windows repair using the windows disks but that didn't help either.
Here is the code from the blue screen: *** STOP: 0x000000B4 (0x89EE77E8, 0x89C01000, 0x89BC1000, 0x00050000)
At the top of the blue screen it states that the video driver failed to initialize. We do have the latest release of Nvidea drivers for the 8600. These were just installed a few days ago.
Before we begin trying to troubleshoot these issues, I would just like you to know a couple of things.
I will try, to the best of my ability, to restore the usability of this computer. However, I cannot promise that anything I suggest will allow you to boot properly again - these fixes may or may not work. If it comes down to it, you may have to be prepared to format your computer and re-install Windows. If this is the case then we will make every effort to help you backup any necessary data.
I may have to refer you to the Techies briefly to get you booted into Windows so I can troubleshoot your malware problems. Malware is my main area so boot problems are a little hazy with me at best.
Ok, with that in mind, lets begin.
Firstly, lets try Last Known Good Configuration.
Please reboot your computer.
Once Windows begins to load, press F8 (as if going into safe mode)
Select Last Know Good Configuration from the list, and hit Enter.
Let me know if this has any effect. If not, we will try another way of repairing your system files.
