[Resolved] very very very slow computer

Hi for the last two weeks my pc got very slow, sometime it's one out of our three sessions on windows xp and the other two are ok , but lately it's all of them. some time it's ok in the morning and them it get very slow. Did a few scans of spybot s&d but its not helping everytime. most of the time its by doing a restart of pc. sometime even the arrow is slow moving.thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Papou,

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.

I don't see much problem showing. Lets try a couple of things.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi Tomk. Thanks for your time and help. The computer on one session is normal (just to open internet = few second), on a second one it's a little bite slow (internet = up to 30 sec.)and the third one is slow (internet = over 1 min.) not as slow as when I first asked for help this afternoon. This after noon internet took me over 3 minutes on the first session. Could it make a difference on witch session I do any of the scan ?

Papou,

You have Easy SpyRemover. It is considered Rogue program

Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
In Add or Remove Programs, Remove Easy SpyRemover

With that done, Log looks good

Your problem may not be malware related. I suggest that you post a question in the Windows forum here. It is possible that one of the Tech. experts may be able to help you.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:

From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
click on Properties
Select the Automatic Updates tab
Click on Automatic
Click on Apply button
Click on OK to exit.

If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

Hi Tomk! If you don't mind I would like to make a last try. Here is a log from a session witch is taking me a average of 1 minute to open any internet page. If you don't see anything I'll go to window team, by the way do I send them a log too. Another thing on your last reply to ask me to remove Easy spy remover but it was already done a day before is it normal that you can still see it but not me on the add\remove program section. Let's dig a little deeper.

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: [external image: Posted Image]) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I will let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

SPYBOT TEATIMER

Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
Exit Spybot S&D when done.
(When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

C.Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]

DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual user account.
Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any key to restart the PC.
Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
- ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
- VundoFix backups, if present
- The C:\Deckard folder, if present
- The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

I'm sorry. I just can't find any malware. I think your best bet is the windows forum. Don't post a log there but do post a link to this thread so that they can review the logs here.

Hi Tomk! Again thank you for your time and help. All your instructions were very easy to follow. And I learned a little more about using my pc . If I may ask one more question? Is it normal that in the window forum, after I had receive one response from a member of teck team telling me to wait until you cleared me, that I received another one from an authentik member. And if so, do I wait for the teck member to tell me excatly what to try or do I try what the authentic member is telling me. If I ask it's I 'm only used to work with only one member in the hijack forum. Thank a lot again! Papou

The malware removal forum is kind of special because it is one-on-one. Trying to correct a problem from two different directions at the same time can cause serious problems because of the power of the tools we use.

The Windows forum is an open forum. Multiple people can and will post with advice. The "approved" Tech members monitor the forum and will correct bad advice if they see it being given. Mostly, the advice given there is not risky, you won't be asked to do something that might harm your computer. Just because someone isn't a member of the Tech team, it doesn't mean that they don't have some knowledge that will be beneficial to your issue. Ultimately, it is your computer and you will have to decide what advice to follow. If you get advice that concerns you, say so and possibly another tech helper may be able to provide verification.

I've read the thread there, it appears to me that Tallin has seen something specific in your logs. I don't know what it is. When he is back online here, I believe he will follow up with his advice. DaChew is suggesting that you make sure you have up-to-date drivers. This is often good advice. I'm not a windows expert by any stretch of the imagination but my gut feeling is that an old driver is unlikely to suddenly make your computer slow as you described. The people in the windows forums may know of some interaction problem between an older driver and something like a recent Windows update. I just don't know. I know of no way that you can harm your computer by following his advice.
