[Resolved] Lenovo LT - No Wallpaper, No Start Menu

Here's a log from my neighbor's LT. A fairly new Lenovo laptop (Pentium Dual @ 1.73 Mhz, 2gB RAM, large HDD practically empty) that has XP Pro SP3 loaded. I want to keep it away from the 'net right now. It had text "VIRUS ALERT" in the SysTray and on the Main Panel of system Props. I got rid of that. No control panel, no explorer, locked out of the Admin. From Safe mode: Ran SpyBot on it, got rid of a lot of baddies. It still has Smitfraud which SpyBot seems to not handle. I found rogues in three places with AutoRuns in diagnostic mode, this brought back the desktop and the Start menu and control panel and the Admin under normal boot. So I'm gaining on it. There is an instance of Symantec being on here - uses AVG8.0 at present. There is a VPN tunnel in use for work purposes. A manual restore point has been created right after the time this log was created.

Please take a look at this log and help me get rid of SmitFraud and I'm sure there are more leftovers. I didn't realize I could upload the log so I did that too - sorry if that was wrong. I'm skilled with DOS and Windows. I promise to keep engaged in this thread if someone will please guide me through this one. Thanks.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Ken - thanks for coming in! Really appreciate it. HJT ran. The 03 Toolbar is gone. So is the fqeb*.dll from Windows. I've exposed all files in explorer. I also searched drive-wide to ensure that .dll was expunged. Runing MalWareBytes at present - it will take a while. This LT is outfitted with a VPN tunnel 'cause he uses it for work. As such it won't get on the net without a lot of futzing. If I run MBAM without an update, it that good/bad? I realize a current update is best, but right now I'm hoping that the sig file in the install will be sufficient. What do you think? Thanks.

You can run it without an update , when you download it it will be pretty current, you can always run it again later when he has an internet connection

OK, Ken - here's where we are. MBAM - scanned - found 11 infections. I could not remove them all at one time. Tried twice - MBAM would jam up on fqbewlna.bdeq. So, I deleted incrementally. Took off the first 9. OK. Took off fqbewlan.toolbar.1 by iteself. OK - did log. Then took off fqbewlna.bdeq by itself and it worked. I have the last two log files dumped below. Hope this doesn't waste your time: Notice also that the 2 R0s did not release using HJT.

These are more clutter than anything, you may be able to remove them in Safemode

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
    this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Lets make sure this is gone

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\fqbewlna.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.




System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.


Reboot your computer


Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.


Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important

  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
    You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point

OK, here's where I am this AM.

Safe Mode > HJT > check off the 2 R0s. > Fix Selected > still there. I believe these may get valid values when and if an internet connection is established because right now there is no IE and thus no search page/search assistant to change the value to.

Safe Mode > OTMove2 > input filename/filepath > reports not found > closed it.

Reboot normally.

Re-ran HJT - R0s still present.

Re-enabled Sys Restore. Launched a manual restore point.

OK, how's it running? For a new laptop, I'd get my money back if I were he. Slowsky…. This LT came with DK Lite, which I've just used at 9% defragmented. Went thru OK - still not what I would call "peppy". I'm going to snap on SpyBot's Resident processes to avoid this happening again and instruct on their use. Also instruct on use of MBAM which I will leave on.

With those two he has about the max coverage unless you can suggest another layer ? or a different strategy. (Yes, you want only one AV/AntiMalware/AntiSpam prog to be resident at one time.) He's dumped Norton (bundled with LT) for AVG 8 as you can see and thought that would provide full coverage. Not so…

Wish I could get this to log on to the net so I can be sure that it updates. I'll also try to remove the Norton LU that was a left over.

Your log looks fine, May want to check and see how much memory he has, thats the good upgrade that will speed up performance, with XP, he should have a minimum of 512mb but more would be better.

All I see running with Norton is Live Update

You can download and run this tool from Symantec that will remove the rest of there software

You also need to update Java.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Terrific, Ken. I just brought the LT over to the house. We plugged it in and fired up his special purpose VPN. Wireless is disabled per corp policy. Three different logins (!) - I would've never been able to get that thing on the net. He's got to tunnel to the corp site (log in 1), then onto the VPN server to "claim a session" (?) (log in 2) and then onto the client software mini-browser (log in 3). How do these guys make any money…

Java removed and updated fine while I was there. He claims it's much faster (beauty is in the eyes…)
