In the codeblock below is my HJT log as requested here. To respond to one piece of advice from there, I did use ATF to clean out my junk (new files of the sort I was originally concerned about have appeared there since, however) and at any rate, I manually dispose of most of the things that gets rid of on a fairly regular basis. Also, running ATF screwed up the display of some Web pages for me (including this one) until I manually re-cleared Firefox's cache.

That seems to be gone, now that I've done a reboot. However, I still seem to have something called dc3 (the name coincides with a known piece of malware) lurking in my recycle bin, invisible and undeletable either manually or by ATF; and those three random-named files in my TEMP files are similarly still there and now unkillable, which their predecessors were not. This seems to be getting worse, not better. Actually, I figured out why I couldn't delete those four files - my firewall had quarantined them. I removed them from the quarantine list and was then able to delete them in the usual way.
I don't see a anti-virus program running. Get a free one.

Run a full scan and let us know what it finds along with a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment

Note: Try not to post the logs in Code or Quotes, makes it easier to read without them.
Actually, Comodo Anti-Virus is running in that report (immediately below the same manufacturer's firewall). I have it taking turns with AVG every few months, on the theory that if one misses something the other might catch it. Are the ones you suggested notably superior to these two? I found that I took a huge performance hit from Avast, and Comodo's firewall seems very good in my non-expert, but much more than usually computer-literate, opinion; I was hoping that would be reflected in their AV as well.

My computer actually seems to be fine after doing the various things mentioned in my first post and in my thread in the Windows forum (linked at the top). I haven't noticed any suspicious behaviour since running that most recent MBAW scan posted above, other than the undeletable files that turned out to be my own fault for quarantining them. I *hope* I'm fine after taking those steps, but you can see why I'd want a second opinion; besides, two other volunteers on this forum told me to post here.

Sorry about the code boxes. The reason was actually to make the non-log parts of my post stand out, to ensure they'd be read. Nothing personal, but I've had a lot of people who were supposed to be trying to help me miss important stuff in contexts like this.

Do you still want a full scan? Am I to assume, from the fact that you didn't say otherwise, that you don't see anything suspicious in the HJT log?
O23 - Service: Comodo Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Service - Comodo Inc. - C:\Program Files\Comodo\common\CAVASpy\cavasm.exe

Sorry I missed it.

Lets see if anything is hidding with combofix.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

Make sure you are disconnected from the net

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Here is Combofix:

(Exlanations of discrepancies: I ditched Guard (AVG Anti-Spyware) because it was an out-of-date trial version that no longer did anything but nag me to perform updates it would no longer actually let me perform. I scan with Spybot about once a week anyway. I also got rid of Bonjour because I've been meaning to for ages, I realize it's not harmful but it seems useless and mildly annoying and it's just a hair too close to spyware for me to be completely comfortable with it.

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it. I would, however, appreciate it even more if I could get answers to a couple of questions from my previous post:
- Is there a reason to prefer the two anti-virus programs you mentioned earlier to the ones I'm using now?
- Did you see anything suspicious in the logs I posted earlier, besides the obvious thing at the end of the MBAM log? I assume not but I just want to check to make sure.

Is there a reason to prefer the two anti-virus programs you mentioned earlier to the ones I'm using now?

No reason other then they're good free programs.

Did you see anything suspicious in the logs I posted earlier, besides the obvious thing at the end of the MBAM log?

Only the 023 I've listed in the HJT fix.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

    O23 - Service: ANWS - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFHE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ANWS.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    Delete these Files if listed:
    C:\DOCUMENTS and settings\JEFFHE~1\LOCAL Settings\Temp\ANWS.exe

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Was that first thing supposed to uninstall ComboFix? The icon's still there. (Also, my firewall's application control showed it going through a *LOT* of registry keys and folders.)

My computer is not currently behaving in any unusual or suspicious ways.
Good job

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week

(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

Understanding and Using Firewalls

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

[*] Winpatrol

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.

Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
