Infected with some sort of varmint that pretends to be security software and hijacks the browser. I was afraid to go online with this thing, so I used TFC repeatedly and then Malwarebytes to root it out. Seems to have worked thanks to those great tools, and no thanks to McAfee, which seemed only able to alert me of attack without controlling it. Anyway, just wanted to post the logs, since I've learned here that things are not always as they seem… thanks so much, as always!

Hi,

There does not appear to be any malware visible, we can run a couple of scans to be certain:

Run malwarebytes again, to see if it comes up clean this time:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
Thanks CatByte! I updated Malwarebytes and did a full system scan with nothing found. I also did a full scan with AdAware and McAfee. If I have time to do a Kaspersky scan during the day while I'm home, I will; but I don't feel comfortable letting it run all night. Here's the latest HJT log. Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi,

That HJT Log looks clean, but do this online scan if you are having trouble with Kaspersky, just so we can be sure, then we can clean up the tools used.

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activeX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.
CatByte- IE8 seems to be killing ESET even before I can accept the activeX. All additional security disabled. Is there a setting I need to change? IE kills the window or tells me there's a malicious code trying to run.
Hi, Go to Tools > Options > Security set the security level to Medium…then go to > Custom level…scroll down to Active X controls and tick 'Enable'
I'm sorry, my security level is set to medium, all activeX is set at enable or prompt, and my scanners are disabled. I even enabled pop-ups since this thing opens in a new window. The window just sits there now with a tiny icon up in the corner.
Hi,

Is your Java version 6 update 16? Is java enabled in IE?

download the latest version here —> http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

To enable Java > Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab.
Click Reset then OK and exit IE
Re-open IE and ensure the Java add-ons are enabled.

Are your shockwave and flash players up to date?

If they are and you still cannot get access please try either the Kaspersky scanner as suggested in a previous post, or try this other scanner.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC Now button
  • A new window will open…click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
CatByte- Latest Java already installed and up-to-date. Shockwave updated. Now the weird part- when I navigate to the Flash Player download page, IE just stops responding. I've don't this a dozen times now. Stops responding even before I can click the ActiveX prompt.
Hi,

There must be a setting in IE preventing this, I don't use it so not all that familiar with it.

Please download and use the Firefox browser - It is what I recommend to do anyway as it's a much safer browser.

Then see if you can access those online scanner sites: then I'll know it's a setting in IE for certain

Firefox can be downloaded here
