I'm a bit confused and am not sure if I am experiencing a false positive scan report or if something is lurking in my system. Ad-Aware 2008 shows a host file entry with a host name UPDATES.QOOLOGIC.COM. Clicking the remove button in Ad-Aware has no effect on this entry. Spybot Search and Destroy scans show all is clear. Also a scan done with Malwarebytes' Anti Malware showed no infected files.
I am experiencing slow load times for both IE and Firefox. Both programs are up to date as are my virus and anti-spyware definitions.
Below is my HJT log. Please let me know what I need to do from here. Thanks!

  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Also, please let me know if you have purposefully set restrictions to your internet explorer

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Tom, Hello and thanks for your help. I'll run the kapersky scan now and post the results when it is complete. What do you mean by restrictions on IE? I have not intentionally set restrictions on IE. I've used IE Spyad and Spyware blaster to help keep the computer clean. I don't think they would have had the effect you are noticing. Firefox gets used the most on this machine. IE is there by default and usually only gets used when something won't work with Firefox. Suzanne
suzannenatl, I can't tell what exactly the restriction is. I just needed to know if you had set access restriction for children or something along those lines. We will remove it after I see your scan report. If it is needed for something you have installed, it can be reset when used later. Often these restrictions are created by malware.
Tomk, Here is the Kapersky scan report: ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Tuesday, September 30, 2008 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0 Program database last update: Tuesday, September 30, 2008 12:10:26 Records in database: 1276528 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: Scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: A:\ C:\ D:\ E:\ F:\ G:\ H:\ I:\ J:\ L:\ Scan statistics: Files scanned: 140120 Threat name: 2 Infected objects: 2 Suspicious objects: 2 Duration of the scan: 03:26:12 File name / Threat name / Threats count C:\Program Files\INITIO\Button Manager v1.836\inihid.exe/C:\Program Files\INITIO\Button Manager v1.836\inihid.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Look2Me.e 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Email Archive\archive04142004.pst Suspicious: Exploit.HTML.Iframe.FileDownload 1 C:\Program Files\INITIO\Button Manager v1.836\inihid.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Look2Me.e 1 L:\mydocuments_archive\Email Archive\archive04142004.pst Suspicious: Exploit.HTML.Iframe.FileDownload 1 The selected area was scanned.
suzannenatl,

No threats present. Just a little cleanup.

You have traces of Norton (Symantec). Probably left from a botched uninstall.
Use the link below to see how to run the Norton Removal Tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…005033108162039

With that done, Log looks good :D

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Do you have any questions? If not I'll close this thread Resolved.
Tomk, I'm glad to hear that there are no threats present. Can you please explain these entries from the Kapersky scan? C:\Program Files\INITIO\Button Manager v1.836\inihid.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Look2Me.e 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Email Archive\archive04142004.pst Suspicious: Exploit.HTML.Iframe.FileDownload 1 Is there anything I need to do about them? I truly appreciate your time and expertise.
suzannenatl,

C:\Program Files\INITIO\Button Manager v1.836\inihid.exe Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Look2Me.e 1

This is a known false positive

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Email Archive\archive04142004.pst Suspicious: Exploit.HTML.Iframe.FileDownload 1

This is telling you that you have some HTML formatted emails in your archive. This vulnerability allows an malicious HTML document, such as email message, to execute automatically when the document is viewed using Internet Explorer. It also affects email clients that use Internet Explorer to view HTML formatted email messages, such as Outlook and Outlook Express. This vulnerability was fixed with IE6 and you have IE7 so you shouldn't be at risk.

In my opinion, you have nothing to worry about. If you don't use Button Manager you can uninstall it using Add/remove programs in your control panel. The other issue can only be resolved by deleting your email archives and I didn't suggest this because I assumed that there were emails there that you want to keep (therefore you archived them) and I cannot tell which email is the issue.

Any other questions?
Tomk, Now I understand. Thank you for the explanations. I have no further questions and I am relieved to know that all is well with my system. Thanks for your help.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
