Hubby managed to get AskPbar on his computer and I *thought* I got it all but apparently not :pullhair:

It's not showing up in HiJackThis anymore but when I ran the Panda online scanner it's showing a generic trojan. I think I'm close here but really have reached the end of my know-how. Here's the HJT log with the Panda log after.

I've also ran ATFcleaner and CCleaner. His SB Search & Destroy is showing all clear as well as Ad Aware. He's running FF3 on WinXP SP3, ZA free and AVG8 free. Everything but Panda is giving him the all clear.

Thanks in advance for the help!!

EDIT: Almost forgot! Panda is saying that Windows Defender is not running and it is not up to date. That's not the case so that's a bit of an oddity…

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Apologies for taking so long to reply. Things got a bit hectic here :)

The computer seems to be running fine right now. Startup lags a bit but that may be due to the number of programs loading. If you don't mind, could you advise what could safely be disabled to speed it up? I'll include the system startup report from Spybot S&D at the end of the post. Panda, which is what was detecting the generic trojan in the first place, is now giving an "all clear." Good news? I hope!

Here's the Malware log:

Thanks LDTate. I don't know what I'd do without all of you at this site
You could uninstall Adaware if you don't use it

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Adaware <–If you don't use it.

The 016's are activeX types. You can remove them and if you visit that web page again they'll come back.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

You can also look here:
Looking good from this end. He definitely seems to be starting up a bit faster than the other day. Once you give the all clear I'll be defragging as well since this computer is due. I just didn't want to do it until I was sure he was all clear.

I left the 016 Nullsoft in there only because we use winamp to broadcast with and I don't know if that would change any of his settings… which is a pain in the butt so it's probably safer to leave it. Adaware is gone. I had only downloaded that after Panda showed there was something lurking. Mostly we just use Spybot S&D, AVG8, CCleaner, ZA free, and Spywareblaster for typical maintenance/safety. I do like ATF because it seems to clean out the remnants that CCleaner misses.

The only other thing I'd like to do is get rid of the old system restores. Anything more than a month wouldn't be necessary to keep. I've moved the percentage down to 5% to cut down on the amount but I wasn't able to find where I could delete the old ones. I noticed a bunch of them when running the Malbytes program. That was actually the longest part of the scan! (Hope it's okay to ask this in here otherwise let me know what forum I should post those questions in because I don't want to hold anyone else up from getting help.)

I'm trying my best to learn all I can since we have three computers in the house. One day I look forward to being able to do these things all by myself. Never stop learning! :)

Here's the updated HJT log…
