Hi Leburch and welcome to the Forums :)

You're infected.

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

Download GMER's application from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

Hi again, we'll continue :)

Your log shows you have Download Accelerator Plus (DAP or dap.exe) installed. DAP is not technically malware, but it may include malware and allow it into your system. Note that the free version is adware based. If it is the free, ad-supported version, then I recommend that you switch to Leechget 2006 Download Manager - this is adware-free freeware. Another free, and spyware free, alternative is Star Downloader. You can find other Safer Alternatives. Should you choose to remove it, uninstall it through Control Panel=>Add/Remove Programs. These are the items to fix in HijackThis:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DownloadAccelerator] "C:\Program Files\DAP\DAP.EXE" /STARTUP
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Clean Traces - C:\Program Files\DAP\Privacy Package\dapcleanerie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\Program Files\DAP\dapextie2.htm

You have two (2) antiviruses installed and running, AVG Antivirus and Norton. Running more that one antivirus at the same time may cause all kinds of problems and is NOT recommended. You should leave only one (1) antivirus running. You should uninstall/disable either AVG Antivirus or Norton. When you have decided, you can uninstall your choice through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs..

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.

I did everything down to the step where I reboot into safe mode. My computer wont reboot in safe mode at this time. I get a blue screen and the message "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" check for viruses on your computer and run checkdisk /F, ***STOP: 0X0000007B, (0XF78A2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) I tried running checkdisk but the command is not recognized. Any idea how to overcome this?

Never mind the chkdsk issue, I will try and see if it will let me into safe mode after I run it.

No luck. I tried chkdsk /f and I'm still getting the blue screen of death whenever I try any variable of safe mode.

Hi again :)

Are you able to start the computer in safe mode?

Download F-Secure Blacklight and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next

You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).

DON'T choose Rename if something was found!

Post the contents of fsbl.xxxx.log to here (blacklight log from your desktop)

I was able to get norton antivirus installed and working again after talking to their tech support line. I still am getting the blue screen with the error message indicated in my earlier post when I try to go into safe mode. The F-Secure Blacklight did not find anything but when I rebooted my norton antivirus gave me a warning that apache.exe was listening for connections from other computers. I chose to block the program from norton firewall. Even though the blacklight program didn't find anything, could their still be some malware in my system?

Hi :)

The apache.exe belongs to your Nvidia firewall. You should not run more than one firewall at the same time, you may get all kinds of conflicts. In your case, it would propably be easiest to disable Nvidia firewall.

Blacklight isn't a traditional virusscanner, it searches for rootkits. It didn't find anything which is a very good sign. Have you ran a full system scan with Norton?

The safe mode problem...Let's try this
  • Download avz4en.zip
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on AVZ.exe
  • Click on the file tab and then click on System recovery.
  • Put a checkmark next to Restore SafeBoot registry keys.
  • Click on Execute selected operations.
Let me know if this lets you boot into safe mode.

I did run a full Norton scan and nothing was found. I ran the AVZ.exe and I can get into safemode now.
