Hi

Just done a online scan with Trend Micro's "Housecall" and its picked up ADWARE_MEMWATCHER here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host\127.0.0.1.

I think it may be a false positive and have something to do with Spybot S&D?

Am I infected?

Stick with it till you're given the all clear.

It seems that Trend Micro Housecall seems to falsely detect parts of the hosts file immunization from Spybot S & D as threats, you log looks fine, but
to just be on the safe side please allow the start-up programs and services to run, you disabled with MSConfig, then run the online scan below and post a new HJT Log.

First

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file.

When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Thank You

In this case ADWARE_MEMWATCHER is a false positive, Trend Mirco flags this up, it is only the Spybot Search and Destroy hosts file immunisation, so you will be fine, all
your logs are clean and I cannot see any sign of infection on your system.

I would not use MSConfig to stop those startups we restarted, there are lots of free good programs to do this, in fact Spybot has it's own tool for this, in advanced mode
but one of the free tools below (Winpatrol) is great at managing start up programs and services safely.

Here is some information and a few free tools to add to your protection

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this site. http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

Do you have anymore questions.
Hi DFW

You are using Internet Explorer v. 7.

Yes Ive got it on my system but I always use Firefox.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Wouldn't Spybot be enough if I only use Firefox?

Thanks for helping me out.

Hi manicd

MSConfig is a utility to troubleshoot the Windows startup process, There's absolutely nothing wrong with MSConfig to manage start ups, but
MSconfig was designed to be used only as a temporary debugging and troubleshooting tool, also I believe it does not show all start ups,
WinPatrol monitors and displays many more locations then your typical programs of its type including MSConfig, it also gives you the option
of stagger starting of programs, it gives you the info on each item, so less likely mistakes could be made, and I think a lot easier to use,
but it is up to you.

Sorry you do use firefox, but spyware blaster does give a little more protection, it blocks cookies in firefox that may be used to track your activities,
build a profile about your habits, collect information, or uniquely identify you to advertisers, it up to you if you use it for that, but as you do not seem to have spybots tea timer
running I think winpatrol would help you, it will alert you if anything tries to run or install itself on you system, it's good for Managing Services and of course start ups.

Cheers mate and thanks for your time [external image: Posted Image]

Edit: Thanks for recommending Winpatrol, excellent program.
Hi DFW can I ask your advice on one more thing?

My AV (NOD32) has picked up this since posting:

27/09/2008 11:42:49 JS/TrojanDownloader.Agent.NFZ trojan connection terminated - quarantined
ACER-FD6B6B72E3\Dan Threat was detected upon access to web by the application: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe.

Since its been quarantined does it mean my computer hasn't been infected?
Can I delete these files?

Sorry about this I will understand if you are busy and cant attend to my post.
Hi again

Looks like a malicious website tried to install that nasty when you visit with firefox, it looks NOD32 quarantined it and terminated your connection,

however just to be on the safe side.

  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click "OK"
  • CCleaner will scan and clean your system.
  • When cleaning is complete:

Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
hen done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an Second online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the uptodate virus definitions. You MAY be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.

Hi again

Looks like Node32 done it's job, if Kaspersky found nothing then you are in the clear.

Alcxmntx.exe, showed up when you allowed the startups from MSConfig, it is installed with hardware drivers for the Realtek AC97 audio device. It is considered malware by some because it surreptitiously monitor one's actions or gather data about customers,
although it is not considered sinister. Hewlett Packard states that you should leave the startup item alone to “avoid sound issues”. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time.

Open up Hijackthis
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked

Then reboot

Post a new HJT Log please
