Hi there. I'm experiencing some massive slowdowns with my computer at the moment, both in regard to downloading and just general performance. Part of this is due to not enough RAM (I've yet to upgrade the 256MB that were included with my computer when I bought it 4 years ago). I understand I'm going to have some lagging performance, but it hasn't been unbearable until recently.

I'm on a Cable modem connection, often downloading at speeds no greater than 20-30 kb/sec where before 100kb/sec was pretty average performance. Standard websurfing has maintained previous speeds, although I've found that trying to access streamed video through YouTube has become dramatically slower as well.

I run AVG, and regularly scan with Spybot. Spybot hasn't found a threat for months now, however, and every time I try to run Ad-Aware it crashes, even upon upgrading/reinstallation. I'm thoroughly flummoxed as to what to do.

Here's my hijackthis log:

Thank you very much for your help.
Hi sitrick2,

It's been a while since you posted so please tell me if anything has changed since your original post.

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.
Also, let me know how your machine is running at present.
After posting this, I rebooted in safe mode and ran stinger.exe and smitfraudfix. That finally got Ad-Aware working, but after running a full system scan it only found one negligible threat. Spybot still finds no threats.

Once I rebooted in normal mode, performance briefly improved, then slowed down moderately again. Not as bad as it had been at the time of posting this, but worse than it had been before the trouble began.

Also, a couple of days ago I was going to defrag my hard drive, and when I went into the accessories part of the start menu, I noticed the "Remote Desktop Connection" menu item was in the abbreviated menu, as if it had been recently used. I never use the Remote Desktop Connection, which is causing me a bit of concern.

Here are the logs, and thanks again for the help:

Hi sitrick2,

I noticed the "Remote Desktop Connection" menu item was in the abbreviated menu, as if it had been recently used. I never use the Remote Desktop Connection, which is causing me a bit of concern.

That menu entry would normally relate to this machine being used to connect to and control a remote machine, rather than this machine being accessed. If you want to make sure your machine isn't being logged on to by Remote Desktop then you can do this:
  • Right-click My Computer on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose Properties.
  • Select the Remote tab and under Remote Desktop UN-check Allow users to remotely connect to this computer
  • Press OK to close the System Properties dialog box and apply the changes.

————————————————————————

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:

JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT 6 Update 5

These are out of date and now a security risk, you already have the latest Java installed (version 6 update 7) don't remove this one.

You have uTorrent and DC++, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove uTorrent and DC++ via Add/Remove Programs.

Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker have been reported as being associated with malware:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/…PokerStars.html
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/…Tilt-Poker.html
so I recommend you remove them via Add/Remove Programs

————————————————————————

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c sc config dnscache start= disabled

A black box should flash on-screen, this is normal.

Then, please reboot your computer.

————————————————————————

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"

  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the Eset report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, please post the SmitfraudFix report located here: C:\rapport.txt and tell me if there has been any improvement in your system
Oops, sorry! Uninstalling the java updates fixed everything. Computer's working at normal speed again. I got so excited I forgot to come back here and mention it. Thanks for the help!
I'm glad to hear things are running better, here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s…re/default.mspx

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
