I have been infected with a virus which calls itself SAM. Everytime I try to do something a message pops up from SAM. For eg: When I open Task Manager a message pops up which says:

What's wrong with the processes?
-SAM-

Or when I open Firefox:

Try something else, IE and Opera are not bad!
-SAM-

I have posted a HijackThis! log. Please help me remove this. I think it came from a friend's pen drive which I was using. I had also removed AVG two days ago because it was causing problems. I also got 'You have a large number of hijacked domains' when i used HJT. I think that's caused by the virus too.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

I will be back shortly with some advice. This machine is highly infected.

DO NOT PUT YOUR FRIENDS USB STICK BACK IN YOUR MACHINE.

Please take the time to read all I have posted.

______________________________________________________
It looks like you have been infected by a few backdoor trojans.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files .

Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing what has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.

More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here

I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

Next problem:
Another Backdoor on your machine is a gaming info stealer. The same rules apply. If you have sensitive information on online gaming sites they need to be changed as well. And done so with a clean machine so the info isn't passed out immediately.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities.

Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

Should you decide to clean this machine start by doing the following.

_____________________________________
Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware can be a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop. If you can help it do not use this machine until we have it clean.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose
before we start.

I see you have some disabled programs through Msconfig.
I need you to start everything in there for me before your next HJT log.
This way I can see if anything bad is not showing . Something Malware likes to do.

Click start/run
Type or copy in msconfig
hit enter
Go to the start up tab
Click on enable all.

Restart when your prompted to.

You computer will start a bit slower but once we have you clean you can go through again a disable what you like.

Please download HoxtXpert.
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Then click on "Restore MSl Hosts file" to restore your Hosts file to its default condidtion..
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against further infection.
  • Close program when complete.

1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations.
* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

2. Click start/run and copy and Paste this in exactly using the picture below for reference:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]

3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTHING while this is happeneing.
  • It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet.
  • If by chance it stops prematurly you can re-establish your internet connection by restarting your computer.
  • This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you.
Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you.

If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer

Post the log from comboFix for me located in
c:\comboFix.txt

I need to know who your internet service provider is.
Do you know whom SIFY INFRASTRUCTURE[/b is?

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from ComboFix
  • Who is your internet service provider.
Thanks for the reply. I knew my computer was in some serious trouble when this stuff started happening. I cannot format my whole hard drive because my brother has also installed Linux on it and he has some very important files in the Linux partition. Can it be solved by just formatting the C:/ partition and reinstalling? If not, then I would like to go ahead and follow your advice on cleaning my computer.

I cannot restore the hosts file with the tool which you provided. I did it once but when i rebooted the old one was back. I tried again and now i get an error: Cannot create file: C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/ETC/hosts

1) I enabled all startup services in msconfig and did a HJT scan. I didn't get the hosts error this time. Here's the log file:

2) Finally i ran Combofix the way you told me but i get a BSOD just seconds after a blue console pops up. The BSOD says:

BAD_POOL_CALLER and the stop error is 0x000000C2 (0x00000040, 0x00000000, 0x80000000, 0x00000000)

3) My ISP is Sify Broadband Limited
I rebooted and again now i am getting the hosts error. I thought I would post the HJT log with the error so here it is:

Okay I have some good news. I friend of mine had the exact same problem and he used Avast Antivirus to remove it successfully. Well I did the same and the Sam thing was removed. I don't get any pop ups like before. After that I tried ComboFix again and no BSOD this time. I have pasted the Combofix log as well as a new HJT log after that. I think the hosts file problem is also solved. I really really appreciate your help. Can you please take a look at the new HJT log and tell me about any more malware that I might have and how to remove them.

After all the scanning I have lost around 500 MB of disk space. How can I recover it?
Looks much better.
I did some checking around and as long as your OK with cleaning this machine insted of reformatting will be the easiest way to go.
The best advice I received for formatting was to back up everything important on Linux system and wipe them both out and start over. Because of both windows and Linux on the same drive.

I friend of mine had the exact same problem and he used Avast Antivirus to remove it successfully

I'm curious this wasn't the same friens with the usb sticks was it ?

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

I see no evidence of a fire wall. I suggest you get one in place now.

A few words on Microsofts firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.
To disable it.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firwalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Firewalls
Comodo If choosing this one be sure to UNCHECK install ask tool bar during installation,

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

Online armor Firewall

That's it. I hope there's some improvement.

Me too!

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from ComboFix
  • How do things seem to be running ?
  • OH! Don't forget to tell your friend he's more than likely infected. :wavey:
Ok everything went on smoothly, except for Comodor which kept popping up when ComboFix was running. I disabled it temporarily then it wouldn't start on the next startup. Gave some error. After some fooling around i managed to reinstall it though. There are still some things in it which I don't understand. At any random time it pops up a message that something is trying to connect to the internet. I don't know what to allow and what to block. At some point my internet wouldn't work. I disabled the Firewall and it worked. Right now however it's working pretty well. No popups and my internet is working fine.

Now the logs:

How do things seem to be running ?

Actually my computer was never slow even when it had so much malware. That's the reason I didn't suspect anything. Everything was running smoothly. Startup/Shutdown was pretty fast. Even when Mr Sam was aboard I didn't feel the computer was slowing down. Only after reading your reply did I find out that my machine was highly infected. Right now everything is working fine.

I have already asked my friend to post his log here. You guys are doing a great job. Keep up the good work!

Still waiting for your 'All Clean' verdict…….
Glad you got the Firewall installed. Probably should have waited until combofix was run and done. Would have saved you some grief.
Things look good to just a few orphaned entries to fix with HJT now that you uninstalled AVG . I will NOT need to see a new HJT log.

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

Close that.

The firewall.
There should be a box to place a check mark in each time it pops up asking if you want to allow such and such a program to contact the internet. (remember this answer)
Be sure of the program before you tick that check mark. If your unsure google it. You'de be surprised how easy it is to find answers. And by doing this you will learn alot your computer.

Naturally allow things like your browser and programs you purposley install. It's usually the out of the blue when your firewall asks you something should you be concerned.

At first this can become annoying but as time goes on you will teach your firewall what to allow. And some day when and if
another nasty wants to contact the internet and you stop it before it does any harm you'll see the benifits.

Heres two that you can allow.

svchost.exe
generic host process

Heres a link to comodos forum if you need further help.

Great news ! [external image: Posted Image]

Your logs now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.

________________________________
Go to start > run and copy and paste this in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the
system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

A few things to help with possible threats

These are optional . But will help protect you further.

SpywareBlaster

Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs.
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
Okay did everything you told. Great to hear that my computer is clean finally. And yeah I have Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard and Avast AntiVirus installed. Is it okay to have all three installed at the same time? I never use Internet Explorer. Always Firefox. So if there's anything I can do to make Firefox also more secure I will do that. And again thanks for the help and time that you have given to my problem. Really appreciate it. Keep up the great work!

And yeah I have Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard and Avast AntiVirus installed. Is it okay to have all three installed at the same time?

Yes.

Firefox will be a bit safer by default . Placing the host file in place will be added protection.
