Hey - Having some probs the last couple dayz. My Zone Alarm has been asking me to allow/deny 'svchost.exe' and I've been denying it each time. It lists a destination IP which apparently is Verizon email servers. My Zone Alarm has never asked this before yesterday.

Today, about an hour ago, it asked again, and this time, I allowed it just 1 time. Almost immediately after allowing it, Avast detected a virus. I took action, & moved it to the chest.

The end result is that my wallpaper background was changed to look like an alert. It now says "Your computer has been affected by spyware". It lists 2 different types below in a box :

"Warning! Win32/Adware.Virtumonde" detected on your computer &
"Warning! Win32/PrivacyRemover.m64" detected on your computer

Weird. That stuff is now my windows wallpaper. I ran Adaware scan, and nothing came up. I ran AVG Anti-Spyware, and it detected 4 items, calling it winhound. This was there before on a prior scan. It cannot remove it for some reason.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is my HiJackThis log :

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Last nite my computer completely froze up. After two softboots, nothing. I then rebooted in safe mode w/out networking and let my Avast run a scan. It picked up a bunch of stuff during the memory check. After finishing that, it asked to do a boot scan, and I said OK. 16 hours later, home from work, it finished the scan, having moved a TON of stuff to the chest, I got back to the desktop and am able to run the proggies u asked and post the logs.

Last nite, before my crash, for about 5 hours, I could not get to this site. It was as if the virus was blocking it. Google searches were messed up, and it was taking me to advert sites….weird…

Followed your steps exactly. Here are the logs you requested :

Let me know what u think & what to do next…
Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Followed your steps. Took a LONG time for my router to power up. About 10-15 minutes of down after 1 fresh reboot after the CombiFix reboot. So, a total of 2 reboots.

Here is my logs :

Hello again, I went to that website and idid the scans as you requested the 1st file : FOUND NOTHING (from every source) the 2nd file : FOUND NOTHING (from every source) I also went ahead & ran AVG Anti-Spyware because that is the only one that has been finding the winhound file, but kept failing at deleting or quarantining it. I ran a registry scan and it found 4 objects ALL pertaining to the adware-winhound.com. Hello again,

I went to that website and idid the scans as you requested

the 1st file : FOUND NOTHING (from every source)

the 2nd file : FOUND NOTHING (from every source)

I also went ahead & ran AVG Anti-Spyware because that is the only one that has been finding the winhound file, but kept failing at deleting or quarantining it.

I ran a registry scan and it found 4 objects ALL pertaining to the adware-winhound.com.

Says located here : HKLM\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com\WinHound
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com\WinHound\WinHound
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com\WinHound\WinHound\WinHound

There ya go…

Click "Start"> "Run"> type in Regedit tap Enter Key

Make sure "My Computer" is highlighted

Click "Edit"> "Find"
Type in WinHound tap Enter Key.
Right Click on the file if found and select "Delete"

Tap the "F3" Key to find the next entry of the file. Continue using the "F3" Key until it's finished searching.

Close Regedit.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I did what you said w/ the regedit stuff, and it found the winhound stuff, 4 of them. It would not let me delete any of them. They are branched together, 3 sub-folders. The last folder said something like access denied, or no key found. I didn't do a re-boot, since nothing as deleted. Do u still want a HiJackThis log? I would fathom it would be the same as the last one…? What to do now?
I don't think it's active.

Do you know how to take ownership in the registry?

Right Click on HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com
Permissions> Advanced> highlite your user name and take ownership.
Now try to remove them.
I did take control like how you said, but it still won't delete it. I ALLOWED for every user on the computer, which is only me. Not sure why there is like 4 or 5 users… Anyways, it's still there and not going away… :(

Can you give me the exact keys? I need to see the exact lines.
Like is this one of them?
HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com

Here they are :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com (no value set under data column)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound\winhound (C:\program files\winhound)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound\winhound\winhound (no value set under data column)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound\winhound\winhound\License ***CANNOT OPEN LICENSE : ERROR WHILE OPENING KEY***

Hope that helps

Thx for all your help & patience
Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: * files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound.com]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound\winhound]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound\winhound\winhound]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Winhound\winhound\winhound\License]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
