Well my sister just up and brought out of the house the laptop but I forgot to update the virus database in the Avast! Anti-Virus. After she got home I asked her if she used some USB drives when working with her friends, she said that she had several used so I got to scan the laptop to make sure if it got infected. Sure enough it really had got infected. I updated first the Avast! database the performed a boot-scan with it, it removed several viruses and trojans in a number of folders, ones I can remember were the Restore folder, WINDOWS folder and the C:. To make sure the system was purged I loaded up Kapersky's Online Scanner, but it picked up at once several viruses that Avast! missed. To prepare for this report I saved the scan log of Kapersky's Online Scanner, and then rebooted to save another log from a Hijackthis scan. I present both below and ask for your sincere and we'll appreciated help on my problem.

Thank you in advance.

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for replying at once.

I have run an HJT scan on my laptop and have been observing for the past couple of days what problems arise when I start up. No visible problems occur while I'm running most of the programs, and no signals show up from the anti-virus software installed for long periods of time. No adverse alerts are signaled from the ZoneAlarm Firewall. The only program that show a problem is Mozilla Firefox, when I plug my broadband connection to it, for it is unable to update itself automatically like the same program installed in my other computer (this one a box type). These are my observations and below I present the HJT log from the scan I mentioned earlier:

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

I'm not seeing anything bad but lets have a look.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I've done what you've instructed and have observed nothing out of the ordinary with my laptop. But maybe that's because I'm not always connected to the internet with my laptop, only when the laptop becomes infected with a virus and when I feel some major updates are required for vital programs do I ever connect to the internet with this laptop. But so far even with it connected now no beeps or alarms are sounded off. The requested scan logs are presented below. Thank you again for responding and good day.

Sorry for the late reply, had a lot of stuff to fix here at home and my sister also used another rogue UBS drive on the laptop again. So any ways I've done as instructed and so far no improper actions happened the whole time the laptop was on from your reply. There were a couple of viruses though after my sister used her infected USB drive so I up and boot-scanned the laptop using Avast! and deleted the infected ones once again. I believe the combofix log also noted a deleted .dll file. Here are the log files, and many thanks again.

If your sister doesn't format that USB drive, every computer she puts it in will be infected.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Done and uninstalled Combofix as per instruction, and also updated the mentioned programs. My problem though is that I can't seem make outpost work for my laptop. It blocks even my internet connection so I just reinstalled Zonealarm since it works best for the laptop. Got the OS updated to SP3 with windows update, so far nothings budging. Thanks again for the help and I will be more vigilant from now on with my laptop security.
