Thanks in advance for your help.
Everything on my laptop keeps crashing. EVERYTHING. IE, Firefox, wi-fi, outlook, I cant open system icon, etc. I am a complete novice, and Ken545 helped me thru some malware issues a short while ago. A sony tech completely messed up my system when he did a system restore. Since then, all the malware seem to be back with a wicked vengeance!! I cannot stabilize my system enough to download firewalls etc.

HijackThis says that I have a large number of hijacked domains. What does this mean?? Please help me. You guys here a re a hundred times better than any tech support person. Most dont know what I am talking about, and their default fix seems to be system restore!

Welcome zina

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Please Note: My instructions to you are checked by an expert prior to posting. This may cause a small delay between posts.

Create an Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file
  • When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply
Thanks
Thank you soooo much. My replies may take twice as long because my wi-fi connection is dead, and IE and Firefox are unstable so I cannot hard wire a LAN. I am saving everytin to a flash, and uploading on a borrowed computer. BTW, I apologize for the multiple posts previously. My system was completely unstable, and it was a race against whatever bug it was that was shutting down IE and Firefox seemingly every 2 minutes. Every time I clicked on the "Post" option, the browser would simply shut down. I did not realize that the post had gone through. Once I logged in with a different computer, and to my horror saw the multiple posts, I tried deleting them, but that option was not available. I tried explaining, but I nonetheless seem to have offended some in the community, especially Rorscharch112. In desperation, I posted under a different id. Apologies again. JMW3, thanks in advance for your help.
Backdoor Warning
Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). We can attempt to clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

It's your call. Let me know what you want to do.
Awww shucks!! Okay, i will do a reformat. Quick question, if I do a restore (F10 key for sony vaio) taking the PC back to factory settings, will that take care of it? I think that also reformats the drive and reinstalls windows xp from a partition on the drive, Yes?

That should be OK so long as that option completely wipes the drive, meaning everything on it including your data. So make sure you back up any important data you may have before trying that option.

Once you have a clean sysytem here are some tips to help keep it that way.

While reviewing your logs I noted you didn't have any evidence of anti-virus software.
Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

Set Correct Settings For Files That Should Be Hidden In Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab
  • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders
  • If unchecked, checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check Display content of system folders
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
  • Click OK

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
You can download it here

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
  • A short distance down the page in the centre, click on the Download button
  • Agree to the license
  • On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word Hosts Manager choose Save Target As and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop
  • Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager
  • After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop)
  • When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the right side of the bar labeled Options and Tools,
  • Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
  • In the Left Pane, click Download
  • It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.
If you have a separate party firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Install WinPatrol
Download it here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here on how to prevent Malware.

Hopefully these steps will help keep your computer clean.

Stand Up and Be Counted —> Malware Complaints <— where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
Thanks for all the good advice. I have taken the liberty of copying my HijackThis logs again, hoping that you would not mind going over it:

I see you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, we'll use that first:
  • Open the program, click Updates then Check for Updates
  • Once the program has updated, select Perform full scan, then click Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi zina Both your HijackThis & Malwarebytes' logs are clean. Good work. I see you have installed some of the programs I recommended. Follow the advice from my previous post, keep your securtiy programs updated, run regular scans & it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again. Good luck & safe surfing.
