Well, the other night while browsing, I clicked a link to what I thought was a simple music blog, but what was really a trap for the malware known as Antivirus XP 2008. I immediately began getting popups and fake "your computer is infected" notices, my background was changed to an image that said I needed to activate their software, and my ability to access certain tabs in Display properties (background, screensaver) was disabled. My System Restore was also affected– the only restore point was from the exact moment of infection.

This is the first known malware infection I've had to deal with since I started running Windows XP 3 and a half years ago, so I was a bit old fashioned in how I tried to get rid of it. I located some files created at the time of the infection– an .exe, some dll files in my system32 folder, and deleted them. I did regedit and deleted the keys that blocked me from fully accessing my Display properties. I thought this cleaned the whole thing up.

Just to be sure, I thought I'd grab a scanning software and see what it picked up. However, when I tried to google Spybot, I noticed that I was being redirected through a proxy or something (the address info in the lower left of my browser window mentioned the site "anilitics-check.google.com," note the misspelling), and my "search results" were all bogus links obviously leading back to this malware. I was unable to go to any website with software that may help me. I could not access Windows Update or the download pages for IE or Firefox.

I had a friend give me a copy of Spybot, which I ran. It found some malicious files and I got rid of them. This didn't solve the browser hijack. From majorgeeks, I got a copy of Malwarebytes and ran it. It found some more files, which I told it to fix. There were a few entries that Malwarebytes said it wasn't able to delete without a reboot, so I attempted to restart the computer. It would not boot, but rather it gave a very quick BSOD and restarted in an endless loop. I killed the power and tried to start Windows in Safe Mode but it would hang and not start. My only option was to boot with my last known good settings. This boot is successful, but obviously includes these lingering files from Antivirus XP, and I'm still experiencing browser hijacks.

here is my Hijackthis log:

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me clean this beast off of my laptop. I am posting from my girlfriend's uninfected computer, so I should be able to download any needed software on here and move it over to my infected computer via a USB hard drive.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello and thanks.

First of all, here is the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log:

Again, upon trying to reboot, my computer gets to the Windows loading screen, then flashes a spit second BSOD (so fast I cannot read it) and attepts to boot again. I get the screen which apologizes that Windows did not boot correctly, and gives me the option to boot in Safe Mode, boot in Safe Mode with CMD console, Load Windows Normally, or load Windows with last known good configuration. If I choose to Load Windows Normally or boot in Safe Mode, the boot fails and I am brought back to this same apology screen. The only option which works to successfully load Windows is to use the last known good configuration. When Windows loads, my wireless adapter is not functioning and I have to reinstall the driver in order to get online.

However, when I get online this time, I am able to access and use Windows Update. I also checked some other sites that would not work last night, such as getfirefox.com, and I can actually see the download link now. Google searches seem responsive and are fast enough that I do not notice the anilitics-check.google.com in the lower left corner of the browser. If I google Antivirus XP 2008, I now actually see results which declare it to be malware

Note: I do have automatic updates turned on, and it seems that XP Service Pack 3 is currently downloading.
After windows updates, do this.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
All right, after Service Pack 3 installed and Windows had to reboot, the browser hijack behavior returned.

I ran Combofix and here's the log:

the browser hijack behavior returned.

Is that happening now? Are you getting redirected to a different website then what you tried to go to?
The logs look good.
Well, after an hour or so of cautious browsing, I don't see too many problems. I don't seem to be getting redirected. The only things I've noticed are that although I can go to Windows Update, I'm getting some "page can not be displayed" errors when I check for updates; also I don't seem to be able to sign into Windows Live Messenger or my hotmail account (although I can do both on my girlfriend's laptop). Firefox in my Start Menu states that it is running in Safe Mode. I didn't make any changes to the settings, so I am unsure if this is related to Service Pack 3 or Combofix. This is all I've noticed so far, but I'm so nervous about it that I've been very cautious in my browsing. All right, in addition to not being able to log into my hotmail account or Windows Live Messenger, I am not able to log into my gmail account or my ebay account. It seems like any secure login form is not working?
Spybot or your firewall settings could be blocking things.
Check your firewall settings.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Reboot
Hi. Got home from work, read your message, and followed the instructions. I've been browsing the net with my laptop for a few hours now, and see no problems. I can log into all the previously mentioned sites. Not seeing any hijacks of my google searches. At this point I'm starting to feel pretty good about how the situation looks. What do you advise I do from here? I'd really like to be certain that this stuff is gone, and take preventative measures to endure I don't catch it again. I think I'll be updating my Firefox to version 3 for certain. I'm waiting on the word from you before I do anything, though. I sincerely appreciate all the help you've given me so far. This site is great.
Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
