Smitfraud-C Infected and Removal

Got a nasty case of the Smitfraud-C. Got it off of a USB disk.

I cannot start up in Normal Mode as it crashes after a minute. I do have it up in Safe Mode, but even in "w/ Network" I cannot get a running connection.

Cracked software was removed and I ran Winsockxpfix. This did not seem to fix it. NOTE: I am running in Safe Mode only, Normal Mode locks up/crashes. Right now Safe Mode is the only stable environment for me, so repairs will have to be run out of there. WinVNC pops up when I try to reboot in Normal Mode, is this something to worry about? Also, when I go to shut down my computer, the "Windows is shutting down…" screen locks and Windows never properly shuts down. ???

WinVNC is an application that allows you to remote control your PC from another PC somewhere on the internet





1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Bonjour


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Did what you said, but could not find this line:

Computer starts up, has links for "Error Cleaner", "Privacy Protector", and "Spyware & Protection" on the desktop. Cannot see Control Panel, C: Drive, or access any administrative functions. Clock has changed to 24 hour time and has "VIRUS ALERT" in the system tray. After 1 minute the computer crashes and begins to reboot, upon reboot system doesn't shut down properly and leaves you in the "Windows is shutting down…" screen.

I have rebooted into safe mode, and here is the HiJackThis log:

I hope you told your "buddy" he infected your pc and he needs to format that USB stick. Lets try system restore. Open taskmanager (Alt/Ctrl/Del) keys at same time> at the top left, click File> New Task> copy paste this in or type it in: c:\windows\system32\restore double click on: rstrui.exe run it Restart PC

After trying to restore, the system restarted and gave me the "could not restore your computer, try a different date". I am going to do that, but in the meantime I don't think it will work, any suggestions?

See if you can get this on a thumb drive, copy to infected pc and run it. You'll need to run it without checking for updates.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Malware found 2 related infected folders/files and cleaned them. However, computer has not changed and am still operating in Safe Mode.

The virus is creating this "C:\Windows\privacy_danger" folder which I believe is housing the danger. Malware might have deleted the first one, because now the folder is called "privacy_danger(2)".

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

ComboFix starts and "detects the presence of rootkit activity and must reboot", after restart the computer asks as if I never ran the program.

No need to download again, just follow the instructions
  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

    Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall


    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

* Reconnect to the internet

* Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.

LDTate, Hate to say it, but I think this computer is fried. You've helped me out a ton, but I think I'm going to call this one. I'll close this thread and chalk this up to my error wanting to use a pirated program. I won't be taking my unit to my "buddy" though. Thanks a ton. Steve
