Thanks for any assistance you can give me!
Hi waitingforfall, and Welcome to WhatTheTech

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for the suggestion on Viewpoint, Tomk. And I probably will go ahead and take the steps you suggested. But I don't think the Viewpoint foistware is causing my difficulties. On the 6th of August, I received over 70 e-mails from Russia. Some claimed to be returned mail (though I'd sent nothing out). I deleted them from my Thunderbird e-mail account but the preview pane was open when I highlighted all those e-mails to send them to the trash. I fear that the open preview pane was enough to activate malware. I've since learned that Russian hackers had launched "denial of service" attacks on the Georgian government's Web site, using zombiebots and I'm thinking my machine might have been one of those bots. I definitely had a Trojan since my Trend-Micro scan showed the Trojan in its scan on 10 August. The scan was supposed to have quarantined the Trojan. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. Booting up with my personalized profile is now successful about one time in six or seven. All s the other times, get a message that the system has insufficient resources and must use the default profile. I'm also getting "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message on some, but not all, of the Windows initializing efforts. Thanks for working on my problem!
waitingforfall, You are correct. Viewpoint has nothing to do with your current problem. The ATF program I suggested won't fix anything either. It will clean out "junk" from your computer so that any scans we do will (hopefully) go faster. Malwarebytes may be able to find if something is still there because I'm not seeing anything obvious in your HJT log.
I removed Viewpoint from my programs’ list. Also ran ATF Cleaner though it didn’t prompt me to keep saved passwords.

I couldn’t run Anti-Malware from your link because Windows claimed the setup files were corrupted and a new copy would be needed. Tried it twice then decided to go to Malwarebytes’ site and downloaded it successfully from there. This is the summary of the Anti-Malware quick scan:

I restarted my machine (you were correct, it took a bit longer to boot up after my user log-on but it did start up with my regular profile  ). Maybe it's because I did not disable Trend Micro but when trying to run a HijackThis scan, I got the following message:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type
notepad "C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc[\hosts"
and press Enter. Find the line(s) with HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as "host" (with quotes) and reboot.

So pressed the OK key and got another message:
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure:
modMain_CheckOther1Item()
Error #75 - Path/File access error

Please email me at [removed] reporting the following:
What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
How you can reproduce the error
A complete HijackThis scan log if possible

Windows Version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version 7.0.5730.13
HijackThis version 1.99.1

The notification also said it had been copied to Notepad but Notepad didn't open so I handcopied the above wording–hope I got all the characters, punctuation marks, and numbers as originally shown.

Last but not least, the most recent HijackThis log:

After I send this post, I will try restarting my machine again to see how it's doing. If it boots up normally and with no glitches, I will send a follow-up to this message. If there are problems, will probably leave them until tomorrow to tackle.

Many thanks for the help!
waitingforfall,

You appear to have something going on but it doesn't appear to be malware. I suggest that you post over in the windows forum and see if the Tech Team can help you get straightened out. If you do this, please provide a link to this topic in your post there in case any information in your logs will help them.
Greetings Tomk. My machine is still misbehaving and not loading my own profile in Windows so will try the Windows forum. I appreciate the time you took to investigate for malware problems. Many thanks! . :wavey:
