ok, im officially upset right now. my computer receives a "bad image!" error which says something along the lines of "such and such an .exe file is not a valid windows image" and the program doesn't run. then, i rebooted my computer to fix this. and for some reason, when it finishes loading (at the screen with the windows logo and the loading bar), the screen promptly goes black and it began to reboot again. this went on for about a dozen tries, where i attempted safe mode among other things. among these tries it performed CHKDSK (correct me if those letters are wrong) and corrected/changed a ton of stuff that was supposedly bad. i couldn't stop it cus i was away from the computer when it started, and i didn't realize it might be harmful. finally, my dad checks it out, and decides that Windows XP had been corrupted. (and my dad was a former computer consultant) so we reinstall it, and the computer boots fine. but now on about half the programs i try to run it gets the bad image error. i ran Spybot Search and Destroy and deleted over a dozen programs, but the errors are still there. the biggest annoyance? AVG gets the error, therefore blocking my access to deleting the viruses. the following message pops up when i try to start it: "avgui.exe - Bad Image The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.1433_x-ww_5cf844d2\MSVCR80.dll is not a valid Windows image. please check this against your installation diskette." only 1 problem with the last part. it's AVG free 8.0. no diskette comin with that. some other wierd things too: the computer now picks up my processor as an AMD 1.0 GHz at boot up. but i know that that's a AMD Sempron 2.4 GHz in my tower. it also only reads 512 MB of memory, instead of 1 GB like there is in reality. there are a few other errors. when i try and start Firefox, i get the error "Alert TypeError: Components.classes[cid] has no properties" but it lets me run the browser anyway. YET another problem. when i try AVG and get the aforementioned error, the next time i try to execute ANYTHING i get a message exactly the same except for the title: "avgrsx.exe - Bad Image". all the random numbers and letters are the same as the first error. i NEED some help! :pullhair: my main concern is getting AVG running again so that i can execute a full system scan. if anyone thinks otherwise please say so. in need of help, Jon

If you just reinstalled Windows why would you need to run a scan?

It sounds like your hard drive is failing.
There are probally corrupt sectors, that files where written to but can not be read.
Do you have a diagnostic utility for your hard drive?
If not you can get one from the manufacture.
um, i need to scan cus somehow, some way viruses have infested my computer. and i don't know how to access the diagnostic tool. how would i, granted i have one?
If you just re-installed Windows over the top of the existing OS instead of performing a clean install, then that might be your problem.
well, there was no way to make a clean install. cus the computer wouldn't start without the operating system. so to be metaphorical, i had a piece of paper that was stained, so i put a new sheet on top of it, because there was no other way. and so now both sheets are a mess, correct? good thing im already planning to get a new computer. not entirely because my computer went bad, but i've wanted a new one for a while now.
