My home page has been hijacked by awsomehomepages, I can reset it but any reboot and it's back, the site is blocked or non existent as I never get to it. Also my desktop has been hijacked, a couple of times a cartoonish thing has appeared. I am using a third party program, Second Nature, to manage my desktop background so I have reset it but Microsoft properties desktop controls are locked out. I run Bitdefender suite 2008, and have Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and a-squared scanners, also Spybot S&D resident. I also regularly run CCleaner.

Here is my Hijackthis log, hope you can help

Hi,

Welcome to the forums and sorry for the delay in getting to your post.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
Thanks for the help Indigenus, love the handle, I have run the SDfix tool, following are the log files.

Glad it's running better, need to update Java, then one more scan I think.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to the Sun Java Website
  • Click on the download button next to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
  • Check the circle next to I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click on the link Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Indigenus,
I guess I have to watch Java, it's been automatically updating itself for six years and I had fourteen versions installed going back to version 1.4.
There is also a program called Java Web start should I remove that? at this time I have not.
Below is the Kapersky log:
Good morning,
A couple of things here….
You can keep the Java Web Start app. Just make sure you have the latest version of it also. Here is some info. on it:
http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/de…start/index.jsp
Kaspersky found some false positives, a couple of the tools you used here, which is normal and we can remove those now too.
C:\SDFix
H:\Install\Smitfraudfix
It also found some infected items in your Outlook folder. You may have some phishing emails or malicious attachments in there. You should probably go through and clean those up by deleting them.
Also there are a couple of items I missed earlier that can be fixed with HJT, plus I think we can fix all those active x controls that came up after you removed the old version of Java.
Run HijackThis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.
Other than that I think you are good to go. You should clear your restore points and here is some info. on some other tools you may want to consider.
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).
Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create
Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.
In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.
Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.
http://www.castlecops.com/t7736-So_how_did…irst_place.html
All done, I try to update my security software on all my family s computers at least once a week, so I will redouble my efforts there. I need to go read up on use of Zoned out that one was not as obvious as the others, so once again Indigenus a big thanks from this user and to all the others that volunteer their time to help keep this increasingly essential conduit of life from corruption. You have my respect and best wishes. DevoDave
Glad it worked out and thank you for the kind words. I'll leave the topic open for a couple days in case there are any more issues or if you have questions. Take care, Dave
