I suspect a keylogger on my computer. An online game account was hacked into and the password changed. My computer is running more slowly than usual. Also, while playing PC games, my computer will randomly shut down almost every time after a few minutes of playing. On the other hand, my fan is always running, so I can't be sure if it's due to a certain infection/keylogger or just to overheating. I have a 2005 HP Pavilion laptop that I've kept up well over the years.

I have updated versions of AVG, Ad-Aware, Spywareguard, CCleaner and Spywareblaster, and of course Windows firewall is enabled. However, I have not downloaded SP3 yet. I use the newest Firefox and just added the the Keyscrambler, Noscript, and WOT add-ons (Note, I added these after learning of the suspected keylogger). And actually, as I'm typing this post, at least one strange thing has happened: my cursor was moved in the middle of typing. Maybe it was an accident, maybe not.

To conclude, I've tried running online scans like Panda and also AVG, but my computer powered off in the middle of both of them. Also, the Anti-Malware link given in the Self-Help area is not allowed by my security policy, so I've skipped that step. I have run ATF Cleaner, though.

Here is my Hijackthis log:

You need to allow this to run

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I've already done the My Computer steps involving revealing the system/hidden folders, etc.
As I said earlier, my fan is constantly running. I have a 2005 HP Pavilion laptop. I've kept it up over the years, though (cleaning, scanning, reformatting). I suspect a keylogger b/c an online game account was hacked into and the password changed. I've since installed Firefox addons Keyscrambler, WOT and Noscript. Before all of this, I already had AVG, CCleaner, Spywareguard and Spywareblaster installed.

Thanks.

Well that didn't show anything.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

If you don't use Viewpoint, use add/remove programs and remove it

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Thanks a lot for the help. One question: that hosts file--the Readme file says it slows down the computer. Is the included (in the readme) process to fix this problem certain to be successful? Again, thanks a bunch.

Again, thanks a bunch.

I didn't notice any slow down from using it.
