This is an XP Pro workstation in a small auto dealership. I've been called in by a friend to try and help them out. Only one workstation of the 15 in the network is affected. Before I took off this morning I did not log in to WTT to see the self-help instruction. But, I think I may have performed fairly similar or equivalient steps anyway.

When I got there, the user states he basically turned it on this morning as is his usual custom and trouble started right away after launching AOL which froze the workstation after opening an attachment (naughty-naughty…) . He was forced to cold boot and that's when the fun began. Sadly, I discovered that Norton AV had not had a signatrue file update since 4/2006. I was told that the workstation is powered down at night and thus misses LiveUpdate scheduling. Updated immediately and tweaked the scheduler and told user to leave the thing running at night. I found C;\ (14 gB total cap) nearly topped out but the D drive (66 gB total cap) nearly empty. Instructions given on how to clean and move off large AOL email (crud) folders to a better place, ie. the D drive. Several large AOL install folders remain and those may disappear on my next visit. There was no valid antispyware process other than NAV in effect when I arrived. Anyway…

There was a desktop, it was plain XP blue with no wallpaper. All the icons were present. There was no ability to reset the wallpaper in the Properties Sheet - the tab was removed. The user is an Admin. There was a rectangle mid-screen proclaiming, "Your system is infected with Spyware. Get a spyware cleaner to remove it" I found XP Antivirus 2008 (which I recognize from experience as a rogue) installed on board and Add/Remove failed as files were locked. I found a few other lighweight baddies. So I began by running CCleaner (akin to ATF) to remove temp files and to adjust the registry. Regained about 2 gig of disk back. I then installed a copy of SpyBot 1.6 which was fully updated and ran it from Safe Mode (akin to MalwareBytes I believe). It found Microsoft AntiSpyware Virus Override and two other registry entries for RUN. Deleted and restarted normally. The rectangle was still there and a shortcut to XP Antivirus 2008 appeared, but I noticed an odd File Folder sitting in Program Files (with big long string ending in "…0ef5" and recognized this value from the SpyBot run. Looked in the folder, found the rectangle .bmp and removed same. Got rid of the Folder which also contained several .dlls that looked fake. There are no more popups for "buy this or buy that antispyware. So now to tackle the hard stuff:

I've posted the HJT log below and would like someone to look it over and instruct me on any other nonsense that appears to ensure it's completely cleared out. I've set SpyBot to monitor activity on this system. And, in the mending process, I would please ask it we maybe could re-establish the tab in Properties so the user can have his favorite wallpaper? Or if that second has to be handled elsewhere, fine. I'll stand by for instructions. Folks should understand the workstation is several miles up the road so I may not have a chance every reply to get there quickly. Thanks.

Update for 7/23: I hope someone will come along to help us with this. Phonecall from user - I didn't go up there today since I've had no answer here and felt the trip useless under those circumstances. User now reports that in a websession, he'll get a completely dark screen with white writing on it that disappears too quickly for him to write much down. This popup screen says something to the effect, "an error has occured. Error code - error code - error code. And if this is the first time you've seen it, do this or that…" This doesn't sound like a BSOD because at the bottom there is a couple of buttons one of which is an OK and one which is a Restart. If the user waits about 6 seconds, it auto-logs off - not a restart of the system but a log off. He logs back in and continues. If the user hits either button it logs off - not restarts but logs off and he continues to be able to work. So now it appears as though I'm faced with a dilemma do I make another trip of 22 miles up and do another hijack log and another unfortunate wait for help? Apology: I know the site is a busy one and volunteers are donating time. I just hope that before tomorrow when I'd like to go up, I can get some feedback on this to help these people out.

Thanks.
