A supposed customer from ebay sent me a legal contract in the form of an exe file of some sort. When I downloaded it, my firewall warned me that the program wanted to make 3 changes to my registry keys. I BLOCKED ALL 3 CHANGES. I lost all my preference settings in my IE7, so I did a system restore to the previous day, and everything seems to be back to normal from that standpoint.

I do however see some curious lags and pauses where I never had them before.

This is the description of the file that the person sent me:
File name: Contract_for_the_Sale_of_Goods.pdf.exe
File size: 688kb
File type: application/octet-stream

And here is my log:

Sorry about the delay in responding :(

If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
 No problem, I understand how busy you guys must be.

brief explanation of what happened: – A supposed client for an expensive item on ebay wanted me to sign a contract which she sent me as a pdf attached to some kind of exe …. when I hit run, MacAffe alerted me that the program wanted to change 3 of my registry key settings, I blocked the change and stopped the download. After that all my personal preferences in my browser disappeared and returned to default, so I did a sysem restore to the previous day which brought everything back. I still have the exe in the email if you want to look at it.

At this point the computer is acting fairly well, but lags when I type sometimes, and I am getting quirky page freezes, etc. but not all the time.

Here is the log file:

We can see if it's malware/spyware/virus

Please stay with this topic until I post the all clean.

You might want to print this out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
:pullhair: Sorry it took me so long, I lost my what the tech password

I do have a persistant problem when I go to print shipping through the USPS site, the Java platform takes a long time to load, and then I am asked to designate printer and allow appelets every single time….grrrr….still haven't figured that one out.
I hope I haven't wasted your time for nothing

PS: I don't know what that warning is about, but my McAFee subscription has expired, although the system is still guarding to some extent.
I haven't decided yet what I am going to do, renew it or get something different
Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.
  • Consider Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

NOTE:

I can give you a link to free anti-virus programs when I get home tonite
Thanks much for the help.

The following instructions were already done, and I did not do it…how did they go back to the original setting I wonder?

- Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
- Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
- Check "Hide protected operating system files."

I am looking forward to the virus program suggestions.

My Java platform loads from scratch everytime I use it to print shipping on the USPS website, Do I need to remove any Java updates or add one?
Everytime it asks me to choose a printer (I always save the setting but it never holds) , Everytime it asks me if I want to allow the appelet, I always check "Always Allow this Appelet" but it never holds. Once I go through all that every time, then I sit there and wait 20 seconds or so while the Java frame comes up, it appears on my lower right bar also, then it finally produces the label.

Thank you again

Len

OK, my java was out of date, now I am up to date as you instructed.

Would you recommend either of these virus programs over the other?

What should I do with the McAfee Suite I have now? Remove it completely? or leave the components that are still working?

Thanks for all your help…and I donated to the what the tech link….well worth it! :notworthy:

Whenever I have trouble I come to this forum, just reading other threads, I get great info

Would you recommend either of these virus programs over the other?

I think they are pretty equal for protection.

What should I do with the McAfee Suite I have now? Remove it completely? or leave the components that are still working?

Doesn't matter. Just be sure you only use one anti-virus and Firewall.
