I'm trying to fix a PC with what looks like multiple infections. What we see:

- Desktop is hijacked with a blue screen that says:
Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC.
Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.
It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities.
Antispyware software helps protect your PC against spyware and other security threats.
Click here to scan your PC for spyware.

- A frequent popup titled "Critical System Warning" which says:
You system is probably infected with latest version of spyware.cyberlog-X.
Type: spyware
Infected length: 266,129 bytes
Risk: High
Affected systems: Windows 95, 98, …
Behavior: Spyware.Cyberlog-X is a spyware program …
Symptoms: Low internet connection speed…
Protection: Click OK to download antispyware software.

- Several different taskbar popups. Some examples:
"System alert: trojan-spy.win32@mx …"
"Windows security alert warning! Spyware detected on you PC. Click here for more information."
"Your computer is working slowly …"
"Internet attack attempt detected …"
"Your security and privacy are at risk! Spyware has been detected on your computer …"

A red "Windows Security Center System Warning" popup:
Alert details
File: winmgnt.exe
Threat: coolwebsearch

A genuine looking Windows Security Center window popup:
Possible spyware infection detected.
You need to update Windows antispyware detection to remove detected spyware from your computer. Click here for details…
Threat name: trojandownloader.xs
To remove detected threat click here…

The browser is throroughly hijacked. Home page is corrupted with an official-looking page saying "Windows Alert Message! Spyware detected on your PC!" When I try to get to any help sites, including this one, Windows update, etc., either the page cannot be found or it gets redirected to a suspicious looking search engine.

We have not (to my knowledge) clicked on any of the links offering to help.

1) You will need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer function, if it is running, as it may interfere with this fix. - this is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labelled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
2) Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
  • Please Note: This tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
Thanks so much for the quick response. However, I'm afraid I didn't get far. It seems like one of the infections is preventing most antispyware programs from running. I exited Spybot S&D Resident in the system tray but then could not get Spybot S&D to run in order to uncheck TeaTimer in tools. As a brute force alternative, I uninstalled Spybot entirely and then rebooted. Downloaded both ComboFix and the Microsoft Recovery Console using a different computer and then copied the exe files to the trouble computer (as noted earlier, the malware is preventing access to most helpful sites). Disabled VirusScan and dragged the Recovery Console icon over the ComboFix icon as instructed. I got the expected Security Warning window, clicked Run, and then … nothing. Rebooted in Safe Mode and tried again. Same result. Earlier, before my first post to this forum, I had attempted to run a different antispyware program (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) based on a suggestion I saw in GladiatorSecurity.com. I had the same result - no response at all. Between Anti-Malware, Spybot, and ComboFix, that makes three antispyware type programs that wouldn't run on the machine. It did run HJT, though.

You will need to make a copy of these instructions because you have to disconnect from the internet to complete the fix. Either print them out or 'Copy and Paste' them into Notepad.

Preparation

1) Copy and paste the following into Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad):

sc stop MsSecurity1.209.4
sc delete MsSecurity1.209.4

Save it to your Desktop with the following filename, including quotation marks: "delete.bat"

2) You will need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders
Instructions can be found here.
** These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

3) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable for the duration of the fix.

Removal

1) End Running Processes through Task Manager.
To do this:
Press and hold CTRL and Alt and tap Delete. This will open Task Manager.
If it is not selected, click on the 'Processes' Tab.

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked

4) Boot into Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
5) Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files that you find there.

6) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files that you find there.
Do this for all Usernames.

7) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.

For I.E. 6 - under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files…
Check the box to the left of 'Delete all offline content' and then click on OK.

For I.E. 7 - under Browsing History, click delete…
Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files…

C:\WINDOWS\system32\uoyzsydz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\aaaamonh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\444.471.exe

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\filetogo.bye
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Double click on the System 32 folder,
Right click on filetogo.bye and from the menu that appears, click on 'Delete'

9) Boot into Normal Mode.

Will you then run HJT and post a new log AND a description of how your PC is running.
Ouch - it won't let me run Task Manager.

Any way I try to open it (CTL-ALT-DEL, start>run>taskmgr, etc.) I get the message "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator."

One more fresh HJT log:

1) Before we start you will need to make a back-up of the registry. This is standard procedure before carrying out any alterations to it.
Go to Start > Run, enter "regedit" (without the quotes) and click on OK.
Highlight My Computer by clicking on it and then go to File > Export…
Give the file an appropriate name, registry backup perhaps, leave the "Save As Type:" as it is and save it somewhere safe.
The Desktop is NOT a good idea as it's too close to the Recycle Bin for comfort!
This may take a moment or two so don't worry.

Should you have any unexpected problems after this fix, double click the registry backup.reg file and click on Yes in the confirmation window and all should be back how it was.

2) Copy the contents of the following box into Notepad. (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
Make sure that you have no blank lines at the beginning, and one blank line at the end:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"="0"

Save it to your Desktop with the following filename, including quotation marks: "regfix.reg"

3) Locate Regfix.reg on your Desktop and double click it.
Click on Yes in the confirmation window.

Now try the previous instructions again.
Another round for the bad guys. As soon as I set DisableTaskMgr to 0, it gets reset back to 1. The people I'm trying to help with this problem are going to get the drive formatted and reloaded from scratch tomorrow. So, I can't thank you enough for all the help on this, but it looks like it's time to close this one out. If they change their monds I'll reopen the topic … Thanks again.
